Until recently they were democratic. At least, that's what my US History class told me. Democratic since the Civil War 'round about.

Yeah I figured i'd light the fuse and watch it blow....predictable outcome as far as I can tell, but very informative.

Well - I'll share it with my group - you might get a few more responses soon, hopefully get a little more dialogue with some diverse responses... (I just hope they stay respectful, but wouldn't hold my breath!)

Most southern states are conservative and that is associated with the
republican party , now. There was a time when the REAL democrat party
was more conservative than their counterparts.

Most states are Republican, not just Southern ones.

There are a lot of factors that go into it, but one such factor clearly is the residue of the Civil War, Jim Crow laws, and the Civil Rights Movement. Prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Acts in the 1960s the South was largely Democratic. With the passage of that act and genuine progress in the area of civil rights (such as the various decisions of the Warren Court) most conservative Democrats left the party and joined up with the Republicans. They were referred to as "Dixiecrats", and their migration to the Republican party inspired the "Southern Strategy" first used by Richard Nixon and since used by every Republican candidate since. The strategy is to make clear to the voting population that you oppose equal rights for minorities, on the theory that you will attract more votes from people who don't believe in equal rights then you will lose from the minorities you've offended.

Try reading sometimes. Something other than SODA. Books and articles have been written about the Dixiecrats. You would learn that after signing the Civil Rights Act, Lyndon Johnson told an aide, "We have lost the South for a generation", knowing there would be a backlash from Southern whites against the Democratic Party. It came to pass.

Much has also been written about Nixon's Southern Strategy...a plan to secure votes for the Republican Party by going after the advocates of segregation as well as most of the Southern Democrats.

Keep watching for the light at the end of that dark tunnel you inhabit. When you see
it, DON'T BE AFRAID...embrace it. This is the worst revised liberal history recollection
that I've ever heard. I do hope that if you wear long pants, you do roll the legs up a couple times.

Yes they are and statements such as yours are devoid of them. Revisionist
liberal history does not a fact make. I went to early voting this morning with
my daughter and there was probably 100 or more people in line. See ya barry
and don't forget mooochelle and her mom.
