If PBS has any significant value, it would survive on it's own merit, that is called capitalism. The strong and deserving survive and the weak are culled. We as a country carry far to much dead weight.

Assuming that it costs half a billion dollars to fund PBS annually and that it's been running since 1970 it cost US around $21 billion since its inception, which is roughly 3.2% of annual military budget. Now, let's look at what has created more value for American public. What would be a bigger loss to US if PBS never existed or if this year's military budget was $21 billion smaller? Ok. That wash"t a fair question considering that US military wasted more than $100 billion in Iraq alone.

Let's make this easier, current military budget for this year is almost $300 billion more than it was before 9/11, what value have American people received for the additional military spending and is it greater than the value of all PBS programming?

I doubt an aircraft carrier every deterred an invading "terrorist" or ever will.

    what are you talking about??
this has nothing to do with the question asked; but it is hard to understand basic military defense; when you support a man that uses the Constitution for toilet paper

The question is which is more important PBS or the military budget. I think PBS is of more value then another aircraft carrier. It is more likely to deter a "terrorist" and it is more likely to add to the defense of the US.

I'm not anti-military. I just think the military is over used and spends to much money. Note we have 13 active carriers last I checked and are building 3 more. I think we can do without one of those with no loss in defense and that is a huge savings. Easily pays for a lot more then PBS.

they do not need a dime!!
They made over 64 million dollars in profits this past year on the Muppet Brands alone....they do not need it; and the heads of PBS gets an annual salary of 632K a year; PLUS benefits...

Ok, if they have the money for there programming then that is a good argument. I still think we don't need 3 more carriers. Just from a defense point of view we'd be better off putting that money into bridges and roads or building chips we use in defense here rather then China.

I don't think PBS is more critical than a military, however, I do believe this country spends too much on the military. All of our problems can't be solved with military might. We need a lean military so MORE money can go towards PBS and perhaps the next generation of Americans won't be as stupid as this one.

Defense it the only legitimate expenditure government should have, that being said, there is room for essential services and infrastructure, etc.... But big bird is not one of them.
I watch a fair amount of PBS and I am certain the good programming would survive and just move on to other outlets.

The founding fathers created the federal government to improve commerce not defense. The only legitimate expenditures of the federal government are those that improve commerce.

I read a lot of history. Commerce was why the constitution was created. Think about it we created a Post Office - improves commerce. We banned tariffs within the states. Once enacted we did not set up standing armies, in fact the Constitution discourages standing armies. Note that even though a navy is mentioned in the Constitution the founding fathers were not particularly interested in building one. We did have a small one for the war of 1812 but used mostly privateers.

Cutting PBS a drop in bucket

When pressed for specific cuts in spending during the presidential debate, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney mentioned only Obamacare and PBS. Certainly Obamacare is significant to address. However, if PBS is the only other example he could present, either he doesn’t, as Joe Biden said, understand arithmetic, or he is keeping secret his true plans.

The total budget is $3.1 trillion. The budget for PBS is $445 million. This amount is significant to an individual, but the percent of the total budget is infinitesimal. In other words, the total budget is $8,380 per person while PBS is only $1.41 per person. The defense budget is $525 billion or $1,669 per person. Reducing it by $1.41 per person would certainly not affect our security.

Not much of a military either. We can't go to sleep but more military spending isn't needed. They could be fine with less like everything else.
