Mitt Romney’s demographic troubles have, by this point, been well-rehearsed by practically every pundit across the political spectrum. However, even in his most troubled demographic (black voters, where Romney was trounced 94-6), the GOP nominee could probably comfort himself that at least – contrary to some polls – he didn’t get 0 percent.

But what if there are parts of the country where Romney not only got zero percent of the vote (a possibility in the case of vote totals so small that rounding renders them null), but actually got literally zero votes? For the nominee of a major party, that would be truly extraordinary – so extraordinary, in fact, that it would strain credulity.

And seeing as this highly unlikely turn of events happened not in one or two precincts, but in over 59 in Philadelphia, and 9 in Cleveland, that credulity can be safely said to be completely strai

It’s one thing for a Democratic presidential candidate to dominate a Democratic city like Philadelphia, but check out this head-spinning figure: In 59 voting divisions in the city, Mitt Romney received not one vote. Zero. Zilch.

These are the kind of numbers that send Republicans into paroxysms of voter-fraud angst, but such results may not be so startling after all.

“We have always had these dense urban corridors that are extremely Democratic,” said Jonathan Rodden, a political science professor at Stanford University. “It’s kind of an urban fact, and you are looking at the extreme end of it in Philadelphia.”ned, if not broken. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

This is a criminal act and needs to be investigated by the Attorney General, although we all know that will never happen. I don't understand how they can get away with this, it's incomprehensible.
Ohio is not the only State that experienced rampant voter fraud.

More and more of these anomalies seem to be popping up. It certainly does seem to point more and more to some sort of fraud.

We can laugh this off, or demand that our representatives do something about it. Republican secretaries of state should be urged to not certify election results until these issues are addressed. We can’t be passive on this.

I'd need to see more info on those precincts in order to form an opinion about why the outcome was the way it is. It is conceivable to me that some precincts could be entirely Black, and not heavily populated, and Romney would have gained no support there. There is a lot of context missing.

Just a hypothetical question: If it were proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Romney did in fact win and the results have been unethically and illegally skewed to favor Obama, would you still say "it's over, just stand by the President," or would you demand Romney be certified as the winner?

"And the outcome is not at all out of step with recent history - in 2008, 57 divisions in Philadelphia returned zero votes for then-GOP nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain. And in 2004, a more Republican-friendly election year, five Philadelphia divisions shut out former President George W. Bush entirely.

Sasha Issenberg, author of The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns, told the Inquirer that relative ease of political organizing in an urban environment may have played a role: "One reason Democrats can maximize votes in Philadelphia is that it's very easy to knock on every door."

And Jonathan Rodden, a political scientist at Stanford University, explained the result as as the logical endpoint of the Democratic Party's dominance in big cities: "We have always had these dense urban corridors that are extremely Democratic," said Rodden. "It's kind of an urban fact, and you are looking at the extreme end of it in Philadelphia."
