Hebrew National Accused of Not Being Kosher: Believable or Baloney?

Hebrew National, a hot dog manufacturer run by ConAgra Foods, has always been trusted to provide kosher food -- meaning their hot dogs fall under the strictest Jewish dietary laws. But the company is now being sued by consumers who claim their products fail to meet kosher standards. According to American Jewish World, 11 individuals filed complaints against ConAgra and AER Services, a third-party certifier, in May. The case is now moving to federal court.

AER president Shlomoh Ben-David said in an interview, "The allegations in the complaint regarding AER are completely and utterly false. There is no basis for them, and they are without any merit." However, the real issue here is AER's failure to adequately address complaints. A lawyer for the plaintiffs said, "How does a consumer who thinks he is buying kosher meat really know he is buying kosher meat? It's a very, very difficult thing for a consumer to detect, unless someone investigates." Do you think Hebrew National is selling non-kosher products?

The whole Kosher Tax thing is a racket and should be punished under RICO act until every last kosher organization is broken up and it's leaders imprisoned for fraud and racketeering.

Unfortunately, we live in a time when conservatives believe in smaller gov't and less gov't. regulations, which seems to be the right combination of ingredients to fuel corporate greed, deceit, and tyranny. From reading the article it seems that had ConAgra answered the complaints, and their answers were satisfactory, the suits would never have been brought. I have contacted them in the past with several issues, and they have answered each of my questions. I love Kosher meat, but don't understand the need for Sodium Nitrates - a known causer of cancer.

I don't have any facts to say it's true or not. But of course it is definitely possible that they deceived consumers.. what coproation doesn't do that? It would be awful if they did and I hope they didn't. But who knows?

I'm not Jewish, so I don't know for sure how to judge what is kosher. But I always believe that big food manufacturers, being corporate and evil, are capable of doing untoward things to deceive consumers.

I think it's really rude and immoral to say that you sell kosher food, which by the way is approved by the Jewish community, and you don't. That is not only lying but just blatant disrespect to the Jewish traditions. I don't think they would stoop so low and do that.

The kosher racket is a lie and blatant disrespect to everyone in the world besides jews. I am angered that any company will stoop so low as to pay a jew to "approve" some food. You know why they do this, right? So they can sell kosher-approved appliances and supplies to the manufacturer, as well as extort them, and then blackball them in the stock market and news if they refuse to comply.

I think they really are Kosher. But these answer choices make no sense. If they're Kosher, this claim that they're not is baloney. If not, baloney is still involved. Before I became vegetarian, I used to always buy Hebrew National, but only because I liked them better than other hot dogs, but still I would hope that the company I bought from tells the truth. I think they do.

I don't particularly like hotdogs, but the only ones I will eat are Kosher ones.

I'm certainly happy to know that there are actual Kosher products out there. Were I in the US, I would only eat Kosher meat or range meat from ranchers I know. I hate our food industry. It's absolutely, horrifyingly disgusting.

IMO, Hebrew National hotdogs are terrible. I got them a couple of times and they were full of grease and oil. I always microwave my Ballpark Beef hotdogs wrapped in paper toweling. They get nice and plump. I got Hebrew National hotdogs once. When I jabbed it with a fork, out spewed hot grease and oil! Yuck! Blessed by a Rabbi? Maybe, but I really don't know what they look for. Maybe just a kick-back.
