The sex scenes in movies made me feel like there was something wrong with me. All of the women in those movies were just effortlessly orgasmic. The guys didn't even TOUCH their clitoris, which is very misleading to someone inexperienced in that department. It makes women feel that they should be able to climax through intercourse alone, and that just doesn't happen like that for some women. Not to mention all of those fake plastic bodies made me feel like my attractive but still not sex scene worthy body was not good enough for anyone.

The fantastical stuff, not really. I mean there are effects like 101 Dalmations leading to a lot of badly-bred dalmations and people getting dogs they couldn't care for...but there you are dealing principally with children. But generally no, people aren't THAT bad about conflating fantasy and realty.

The problem is the stuff that is presented more realistically, but which contains utterly unrealistic elements. Things like people getting their ideas of police work, warfare, terrorism, minorities, or romance from movies. It's when people base their expectations for real life on fantasy. It's one thing to wish for something, or even seek to make something come about because of one's attachment to fiction (every single Japanese mechanical engineer under the age of 50 wants to build a Gundam), it's something else to hold potential romantic partners to an impossible standard.

Would we still be, or ever have been, in Afghanistan and even moreso in Iraq, if it weren't for Hollywood fetishization of WWII?

Have you ever heard of the "CSI Effect?"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Here's a less profound question, but one dealing with more direct societal impacts: If Lance Henriksen had been cast as the Terminator, would Arnold Schwarzenegger be govenor of California? (And would the Terminator have been a better movie? No, and yes, I think.)

The corrosion of American ideals morals and ethics is nothing new for Hollywood which has allways pandered to the lowest common vulgarity and depravity hidden secretly in its audience. Now the vulgarity and depravity is surfacing in ever increasing amounts and our deadened sensibilities don't even recognize it.
The military are depicted as power hungry and malicious murderers and rapers of our society and environment. The man is almost always depicted as a inept incompetent bungling fool in family or other situations which are too "complicated" for the emasculated man.
Children are almost always depicted as being more wise, moral and heroic than most of the adults in a movie and solve the problems that the adults don't have a clue about.
Scientists are almost always depicted as crazy or fringe fanatics which don't have a firm grip on reality and never think about what their scientific discoveries will incur in society and mankind as a whole.
Pernicious bending of ideals to make light of any mention of a belief in God or pushing liberal "progressive" ideals down our throats.
All in all Hollywood has had a negative effect on our American Character and Soceity and its moral and ideaological values.

I detest half baked political rantings from freshly minted stars = publicity wh*res.
I detest the barely legal stars that dress provocatively and behave like vomit on stage.
I detest all the mature/adult themes with hints to sex/sexuality in childrens' films/toons.
I reject terrible violence we see in films often. A documentary, a news reel used to inform and educate is regrettable but very useful.

All this coming out of Hollywood had a negative influence on our cultural development.

not only are the movies getting shallower and shallower, so are the plots. i mean they are killing brain cells. they are not coming up with any good psychological thrillers, or movies that make you think or open your mind. its all just packed with unbelievable action scenes, and hot girls who do nothing but look good. i think people think they need to live up to every celebrity and superficial character created, and that's not really healthy for our society.

True that ideally Hollywood would supply whatever the market demands. In capitalism it does that but that's not all it does. People run the show, and we all have inspiration / motivation / agenda etc that encourages us to do something which wasn't in demand by others. Hollywood in my opinion creates a market for it's product with cleverly crafted scripts infused with ideas and agendas and manipulates demand for its products through clever marketing. Proof point is a long list of movies that aren't box office hits. No demand = no box office hit. Still that "product" has an influence. And the movies that flopped are not only example of product with influence that was not in demand on the marketplace. Popular movies also influence with ideas no one asked for, they do it better, more efficiently because more demand for the product is created if it enjoyed initial success and great reviews. Surely ideas and agendas come through and influence people that never really demanded it.

Not all movies are box office hits, in fact many movies flop. I guess Hollywood keeps making product that isn't in as much demand. Entertaining as hell though!

Are you kidding? 99.5% of the garbage coming out of Hollywood is gore, sexy or progressive agenda. Many of the 'star' have such huge egos, entitlement mind-sets, and have no idea of reality. The media sets these people on pedestals, and people become obsessed with them..........doesn't anyone else realize that these 'idols' fart just like everyone else, and it smells just as bad as everyone else's?

This is because love can change humans to be truly Godly humans. Giving drink, food, and clothing when they need it, and how to recognize a person who you cannot helped by doing these things yet leave the judgment up to God, and only to God. We are glorifying death, and war and killing, revenge, greed ,extortion,.deceit, envy which creates humans that steal. Hollywood is a negative influence on our culture. It influences our video games ,and the minds of men have not the spirit of God in them to not even have a concept of what a good video game would be to show Gods character- image to teach humans so they will not want to war, kill ,Mame, use accusatory words giving guilt to humans who are meek for the meek will inherit the earth. We will show horror as being good, and only Satan loves horror, and or to teach absolutely nothing to make us to be better to each other to get ready for heaven where no one will hurt or destroy.

It has a positive influence on today's youth and also a positive influence on todays's yout.It has a positive influence because all of those singers and rappers teamed up for the remake of "We are the world" for Haiti. They also went down there. Also when Katrina hit, lots of celebrities helped. Helping people is a good example for children. Now it's time for the negative influences. I'll name some celebrities that I feel are bad influences on children.Miley Cyrus for that picture and pose fo that magazine. Tiger Woods for being a man-whore.Chris Brown for hitting a woman (Rihanna). mel gibson for all os his racist and anti-semetic remarks. He just wasn't towards Black people. He also referred to Hispanics as wetbacks. Wetback is a racial slur used towards Hispanics. Ke$ha for the way she dresses.Even though she is awesome. Last, but, not least. Lindsay Lohan for the drinking, partying and being sentenced to 90 days in jail. dresses awesome lastbutnot lindsay lohan drinkingpartying sentenced 90 days jail dresses awesome lastbutnot lindsay lohan drinkingpartying sentenced 90 days jail

Hollywood has a hidden agenda that promotes Liberal/Socialist/Communist ideology in the films it produces. Subtle to deceive the young masses that attend movies at the theaters or by rental. Sort of a political commentary without the chance of an appropriate rebuttal to dispute it.

The best illustration of this are the Weinstein Brothers that produce "Schlock" for huge profits that support their political agenda.

For one its a cycle. American culture influences Hollywood, yet Hollywood can in turn influece American culture. For example, what kid has not been influenced by all the Disney films? As for the question, Hollywood in the past has had a good influence with films like Star wars, Wizard of Oz and Casablanca. However it seems lately Hollywood has had more of a negative influence. It seems like todays action movie always go something like this: Pointless violence, pointless violence, pointless violence, sex scene, pointless violence. Yes the Indiana Jones films had violence but their was a point to it, you know a story behind it, a reason why they were fighting. In todays films its like the director just says "Who cares about the story? we're going to just have a bunch of violent action scenes and a couple sex scenes" . I know that horror flicks have never been family entertainment, but look at todays horror films. They have completely jumped the shark. They are no longer about scaring people, they are about putting as much blood and gore as you can into a 90 minute movie and the only time the gorefest is interupted is for....you guessed it....SEX! Look at the original Halloween, often considered the best horror film ever made, it has little nudity and hardly any gore. Now compare...

Hollywood has convinced many extremely talented people that they simply aren't good enough, or that if they want to get anywhere in the "business" they have to compromise themselves. A good friend of mine was a very successful stage actress and had some small movie/T.V. work, but she hated the "schmacting". (schmoozing/acting) As she said once regarding her reasons for quitting, "I like sex, but I don't want to be a prostitute."

it all depends on which shows/movies you watch, and how much it truly affects you. a select few people really do see violence on tv or watch viva la bam and jackass and get injured. i don't think it makes as big of an impact on a majority of lives as many people seem to claim. really, a lot of hollywood is just annoying.
