Would You Pay $100 for a Pack of Cigarettes?

Many of us would like to see smoking completely eradicated -- but is hiking the cost of a pack of cigarettes up to $100 a fair way to do that? The extreme-sounding option is being considered in New Zealand's Ministry of Health, where efforts are under way to get the country totally smoke-free by 2025, Sky News reports.

The country is also considering a 10 percent increase on a pack of 20 cigarettes year-on-year from 2013 to 2025, meaning it would cost $40 for a pack by 2024. However, the more extreme option would get packs to $100 by 2020.

According to Sky News, a briefing paper on the issue claims that "Tobacco taxation is the single most effective intervention available to drive down smoking prevalence figures." The Ministry is also reportedly considering regulating tobacco as a highly toxic substance; banning smoking in cars with children; doubling of anti-smoking media campaigns; and removing tobacco from duty-free sale. So, would you pay $100 for a pack of smokes? We hope not ... for your wallet's sake!

I haven't smoked for over 30 years, but when I did, yes, I would have paid $100. More if necessary. I may have smoked a little less but I wouldn't have given it up just because of the price.

I was thinking how during the early decades of the 20th century, if you wanted to smoke, you offered everyone around you a cigarette. That was kewl cause I got to try a lot of different brands.

    My favorites.....Herbert Tareytons and Lucky's

But raising the price is a good way to get people to stop buying them.
  • Elyse 2012/04/25 02:54:35
No because I don't smoke, but I bet those that do would. They might say no, but the price is constantly going up and people continue to pay it.

lol you're right, that'd be about $5 each. Not bad. In the dutch coffee shop they often sell for more than that.

Tell ya whats happening here in Ireland with smokes at 9.40 Euros (12.30 Dollar) a Pack, everyone has either switched to rolling tobacco (at 4.40 for a 12.5g pack, roughly 40 smokes) or started buying smuggled ones, from street dealers (a lot of the same people selling weed etc.) at 5 Euro a pack.

The higher they push the price, the more further it goes underground.
  • dv LukeC 2012/04/25 02:25:47
  • Rave LukeC 2012/04/25 04:13:48
Same here, though it's not that expensive, a pack is generally 4.50euros but because of many people losing their jobs it seems that rolling tobacco and underground tobacco is becoming more popular.
  • Chris LukeC 2012/04/25 04:55:08
I would just buy the weed and forget the cigarettes. :D
  • LukeC Chris 2012/04/25 06:20:11
50 euro for 2-3.grams of fairly poor quality weed, our drink is overpriced too, Ireland is on its way to becoming the most depressing place to be.
  • AskZilla LukeC 2012/04/25 20:26:52
Why do you need pot and liquor to stimulate your endorphins. Are you that pathetic?
  • LukeC AskZilla 2012/04/27 13:59:51
Nice, you took the high road, dont look down at me from it.

Theres some really decent people that have that kind of attitude, it might get you somewhere, but it will bring no one with you. If you ask me and a lot of other people, thats pathetic.
  • AskZilla LukeC 2012/04/28 09:28:46
Wasn't asking the question to disparage. Perhaps I should omitted that adjective.

But I truly don't understand people like you who need to ingest poisonous substances to enjoy themselves.

You claim you're depressed (Desperately bored might be a better description) out of your mind and you can't see the answer staring right at you in the face :\

People who habitually consume to many excitotoxins usually don't have happy endings and they have short journeys
  • LukeC AskZilla 2012/04/28 23:55:23
Understand people like me? The vast majority of people are like me, drugs are all around you, if you are oblivious to that im sure you can see how much everyone consumes alcohol.

People enjoy taking all kinds of drugs, and its not always a habit or addiction. Now I see you only decided to throw your healthy lifestyle anti-drug rant at me after I mentioned weed, do you not think cigarettes are more of a problem?

I really enjoy smoking weed, but I can go months without it (and have) not a bother, there is no habit.
However I dont enjoy smoking cigarettes, I cant help but spend all my money on cigarettes, and I cant make it through one hour without a smoke, so why are you complaining about pot and liquor?

And were did I claim I was depressed? ? ?
  • AskZilla LukeC 2012/04/29 04:48:06
The vast majority of people are like you? How do you know that? I would hope that most of us have respect for ourselves and don't want to continue down a path of degenerative behavior with drugs or substance abuse problems.

And to quote "It's not always a habit or addiction?" That's the typical delusion of a drug addict. My ex thought drinking 20 beers a day was normal.

I wasn't really pointing the finger at one addiction or another, I abhor all that stuff, cause it disgusts me - When I'm dealing with someone on drugs, whatever it happens to be, I'm dealing with them in an altered state. Gee what 'fun' :\ This means, I'm not really even dealing with that person, it's some "Mr. Hyde" version of them. Also, people in this country (USA) don't seem to understand the concept of moderation and talk about hangovers and DUIs as if they're nothing more than pimples...

When I was in Italy, people drank and we went out to pubs, but you didn't see people getting into fights and acting stupid, and so intoxicated they could barely stand up, or someone puking in the corner. Somewhat ironic considering over there, it's legal to drink on the streets, even if you want to walk around with a full bottle of champagne or Jack Daniels
  • LukeC AskZilla 2012/05/05 14:57:23
How do I know that? Because I know at least a thousand people who live similarly to me, and I have met around 2000 other people since I was 14 (both old and young) that live like me again.

Ok, so prove I am a drug addict, I dont smoke 20 joints a day..
I can become addicted to anything, cannabis has no more potential for addiction than gambling, if it does, you should be able to prove it.

America doesnt understand moderation? Any good person does, it is vital for all aspects of our life. In America you just give your people with problems and addictions more focus than those doing well. (I mean good average people, not celebrities)

Each country has its own attitude to drink however, it is very obvious, Ireland has a bad mentality for it, in the sense that every kind of social aspect we have involves drinking. Our alcohol prices are incredibly high, our off licenses close at 10, and at pubs, everyone buys 4-5 pints before it closes, meaning there leaving extra drunk.
  • Chris LukeC 2012/05/04 00:07:52 (edited)
That sucks man. Humanity has used cannabis for thousands of years, I think it's our human right to grow it and expand our minds... but that type of mind expansion, realizing we are one with each other and the Universe... isn't what corporations want... or even our governments want, they'd rather you get drunk, have a small closed mind, hate each other and get depressed and join the army to continue these wars.

Well I'm American so i can only speak from my own view, but I would imagine Ireland, like most countries has a similar oppressive government set up to control it's people.

Sorry for the late reply by the way.

  • 001 fcombs 2012/04/25 13:26:16
Or is really stinking rich and uses the cancer sticks as a symbol of status.
  • fcombs 001 2012/04/25 18:28:52
You know - that's lateral thinking. People say I think that way, but you beat me on this one. People will make them a status symbol if they cost that much. It could get rid of all the rich people that some of the people on here bitch about constantly. That might make them happy. Don't know what it would do to political platforms. Wow, this could have a ripple effect.

Here's an idea.... why not STOP SELLING CIGARETTES? It's illegal to sell marijuana (with certain medical exceptions) or cocaine or heroin, so why is it legal to sell something that has been proven to kill people and is highly addictive?

And have all those tobacco addicts go cold turkey at once? I sure wouldn't want to be in front of one on the freeway. lol
