Why do you need to have a background check in order to adopt a dog when any idiot can have a baby?

A friend of mine had a dog for 15 years, and it died a few weeks ago. She and her fiance are ready to get a new one. They wanted to do the right thing and adopt a dog from a shelter, to keep it from being euthanized. She's now finding that she has to get a background check, and that the shelter people show up, unannounced to do spot checks on the dog, AND - she may not even be able to adopt, because her yard isn't fenced in.
Meanwhile, any moron can go out, get themselves knocked up, and be responsible for the life of a HUMAN, and no one comes to do spot checks on them....

I know what she's going through. I am currently going throught the same thing. I have been denied because my yard isn't fenced in with a real fence. We got an invisisble fence. I was told, that it's because a dog can run through an invisisble fence. So I told them that I have had dogs in the past that have dug out under a fence, & that have climbed over the fence. While they told me that it does happen, they still said that I have to get a "REAL" fence if I want to adopt. I'm coming to the conclusion that they like killing animals.

that you're right! It's so sad when you see people that want to adopt dogs, or, more importantly, children, and are ready to do anything for them, but they can't because they're gay or something unimportant like that. And then all these irresponsible people go having children that they don't even want!

I think humans should have to go through a battery of psychological testing before being given a license to reproduce. If they don't pass the tests they should be sterilized.

good point but ant moron can breed dogs and have puppies while more scrutiniy is placed on adoption...

we need licenses to drive, fishing, hunting, gun ownership and even pet-ownership (in some places), but anyone can bring children into this world and are expected to be good parents

It is probably to make sure that people do not have nefarious intent toward the animal. i.e. dogfighting, selling to research facilities, or even hoarders are a problem.

I think shelters get in their own way. Why on earth should you do a background check on adopters when you are just waiting to dispose of the animals. I cannot adopt a dog because I live in an apartment.

Oh, and stupid people shouldn't breed.

We have a dog. We just had to buy him new. We couldn't rescue one. It seems an apartment is a fate worse then death to them.

Any moron can "have a kid", but any moron can't have a kid AND PAY FOR IT- unless they've got some damn good health care (in America). But just about anyone can afford a dog.
Just ask around for someone who's dog had puppies dummy, and get one free. Mutt's are usually the most intelligent dogs anyhow- compared to pure breeds/inbreds. Ain't got no friends or what?

I don't know. There should at least be a class that everyone has to pass or something. Children are beaten and treated like dirt and noone can do anything because they are the 'parents'. And what's with the anti-birth control b.s.? The pro-life people don't believe in birth control, either, which boggles the mind!!!

Doing a background check, and scanning the home to make sure it's safe for the dog, is fine with me in order to adopt a dog. But it's not fair for them to come to the house whenever they want to check up on the dog. So, if that's going to happen, pack your bags and RUN! As for having a baby? Adolescents and teenagers should wear a Chasity Belt until they get married. And whoever wants to marry them, has to obtain the key in the dragons belly.

No fence? Wow, I guess dog parks, regular walks, and lots of love won't suffice? I hope your friend went to a no-kill shelter, because those PETA influenced hypocrites would rather put an animal to death than see it go to a loving home without a fence.

Yeah, I agree with the point you've made about any idiot having a child without a background check. It's the truth. It's reality. I have no idea why someone would DR a valid question.

I have some friends in dog rescue and adoption. They just want to make sure the dog is going to a home where it can be loved and taken care of.
I think we should take the same steps to manage the people population just like we do animals. If we can spay and neuter pets why can't we sterilize people too?

What would the alternative be for humans? Forced abortion for felons? Think of the political fallout of THAT idea. Though really, I DO understand the paranoia of the shelter. Many of these animals come from abusive owners, and they wouldn't be doing their duty if they sent them to just another bad owner.

Ahhh…Good point!! I have to agree with many other posters that this is what happens when PETA runs amuck! Unfortunately it takes these twits value the life of a cockroach more than a human… What can I say other than until there’s a change of personnel (or most of them get kicked out of mommy’s house and forced to get a job!) all one can do is take in a huge bag of McDonald’s and start eating a hamburger as you fill out the forms…then make side comments about having visited Korea and loving their ‘special meats’….
