The Medal of Honor is for exceptional battlefield valor. While these gentlemen were indeed valiant, the mission exceptional, and for their actions they deserve to be recognized, giving them this award would lower it's prestige.

They simply did what they have been trained to do and they did it very well, however, nothing they did merits the awarding of the Medal of Honor.

Under WWII standards, the SEAL Team 6 CO would have gotten the Medal, and the others would have gotten lesser medals and everyone involved would get the Presidential Unit Citation. In today's more stingy environment, I imagine you'll see the PUC with a "V" to everyone, a bunch of Silver Stars to the operators, and maybe a Navy Cross to the operational commander and a Navy Distinguished Service Medal to his boss (if a Captain or higher).

Not necessary; the medal award is often classified for SEALs -- you'll hear about the award, but the name will be withheld until the awardee leaves service or dies.

They did a great job, but this what they were trained to do and they carried out their assignment well.

No. The Medal of Honor is awarded for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. It seems like they were doing their duty. Besides, I think the knowledge that you but the bullet in to Osama's brain pan would be reward enough.

That medal is awarded for actions covered within a very strict definition.

Not just because they killed someone we really wanted dead.

Sorry, but no. The Medal of Honor must be reserved for duty "above and beyond". Our wonderful, brave and talented SEALs were doing their duty, extremely well and with honor, but it was the duty they were trained for.

I agree to the point that it was them who killed OBL.But what about all the planning? It all had to be approved by the white house.I completely agree that the SEALs would have taken him out a long time ago,but the planning and agreement was essential too.

Requirements state that the recipient show courage and ethics above and beyond the call of duty during battle; the majority of CMH holders received the award posthumously. I'm sure the team will be receiving some serious awards for merit, however.

For the poster of this string. Saying Obama doesn't deserve credit is like saying Bin Laden doesn't deserve credit because he didn't fly the planes. The point is the congressional medal of honor is for going above and beyond the call of duty. They(though the duty was incredible)simply followed orders and pulled it off like clockwork. Silver stars or maybe something like that, because they are national heroes, but I don't think they entirely deserve the medal of honor.

There are quals for every award,.. did this qualify?

I REALLY wish people would stop with the lie that the president took full credit for killing Osama while giving no credit to the military - that came from the right trying hard to spin this as a negative.

Yes, this is a Belgian Malinois, it is the preferred dog of the USA Navy seals. They are smaller than the German Shepherd, very fast and athletic, intelligent and extreme devotion to the handler.

This is not the purpose of the Medal of Honor. They should be commended on a job very well done, though. And Obama was the first to give the credit to the military personnel involved.
