DYLAN Thomas .. (1914-1953)
Wrote this POWERFUL Piece of POETRY ..

"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. "

He observed His FATHER ..
Proud, STRONG .. with Army service ..
grow old-er .. experience the frailities .. the problems of OLD AGE ..

This piece SPEAKS .. should SPEAK LOUDLY
to all of us who are of those TENDER (and quite many years)

Why shouldn't we be HEARD?
why shouldn't we speak out .. LET The YOUTH HEAR of our lives, our Experiences?

Why shouldn't we LOUDLY PROCLAIM ..
the problems .. the FOLLIES of the Youth ..
and call them what they are ..
Selfish, short-sighted, Mistakes?

(or conversely applaud the good things)

Should we stand idly by when we see OVERT one-way hypocrisy?
or should we RAISE our VOICES and speak out against it ..
Even when the young ones decry OUR voices being even heard?

This question .. of passing along wisdom ..
the lessons learned from LIVING in interesting times ..

NOT 'politically correct' ..

but quite figuratively a "I TOLD YOU SO" ..
or a LESSON .. needed to be TAUGHT to others indeed ..

it is time to stop and REVERE ..

and start listening?

Having raised my own children ..
I know well the folly of Teenagers and young adults ..

youthful NAIVETY ..
eventually learns the LESSONS that they disregarded from their elders
(who already knew better and saw this happening in the time they were that young as well)

HOW Many of us ..
are committed to passing along still ..
our THOUGHTS, our IDEAS ..

DESPITE the denial of the truth of life .. history ..
from those of us who LIVED THROUGH IT in the first place?

Step backwards .. leap backwards ..
or focus on moving ahead ..

We can speak out on the HYPOCRISY that is present ..
the one-way hate .. the prejudice ..

but be a shining LIGHT as we enter our final of DAYS ..

PLEASE enter your thoughts below ..

Interesting poem. I think it means that we should die angry.

Perhaps it is more of letting you Fight until the fight is done?
Aging is a part of life .. and just because one accumulates the years ..
doesn't mean the LIFE within them .. the fight within them is done ..

That Dylan Thomas poem is something I value and I'm not much on poetry, unless it's something I wrote myself.

When we reach a certain age, part of the human aging process is to see the importance of passing on our knowledge and experiences. On the rare occasion I encounter an elderly person who wants to impart a portion of their life, I make sure I listen. Imagine the person's voice as being young and vibrant. It helps, especially when you know they definitely were once young and vibrant and that you too will one day be old, wanting to share the things you have learned with others.

Young people, do not look down on the old. The elderly are simply yourselves in bodies worn through a lifetime of work and experience. Benefit from them and avoid repeating mistakes that you wouldn't otherwise know about. Realize that despite your inclination to think you know everything, the elderly know a hell of a lot more than you do.

    No nonsense NanC...don't BS me!
I answered this question because it called to mind one of my favorite Dylan Thomas
poems........ finding that was the basis of your question.

I received this record from my husband for our first Christmas celebration......... on the
album is the epic poem "A Child's Christmas in Wales." Actuall the CD is called "A
Child's Christmas in Wales" and at the end Dylan Thomas reads other poems including
this one, "Do Not Go Gently into that Good Night".

It became a Christmas tradition in my family...... and each year I love hearing that
beautiful booming voice which was silenced way too soon.

Thank you for sharing this with your SH friends..........Sgimom. I hope others enjoy
this as much as we do.

MY thoughts as an Elder ..
I voice my opinion when I feel the need, if someone chooses to listen that's great, if not I move on and give it no more consideration.
