Interesting question. There are definitely more teens coming out these days, probably because it's more accepted though I can't say for sure. When one looks at the suicide rate for gay teens it's obviously not an easy road even today. Seems a high price to pay for any reason other than that is who they are.

Umm, would YOU choose to be bullied, bashed, and beaten everyday? If anybody were to do it for attention, it would be the Bisexual GIRLS... And even still, many of them are actually like that... I've never heard of Gay or Bi Guys ever doing it for attention... -_- This is a really ignorant question...

NO. If I knew gay back when I was young and know it not wrong I would have been who I am.

I disagree. The stories my daughter tells me are bizzare. Also what I see is also bizzare.

It has nothing to do with being different. It's how they live their life.

Different is never a good thing for a teen.

If this were true, why aren't more kids choosing to be extremely obese to get attention?

If a kid chooses to be a certain sexuality, clearly they have some leanings towards that sexuality. If you choose to explore homosexuality, you are inclined naturally ever so slightly towards gay. Maybe it doesn't make up the bulk, or any, of your committed relationships. Maybe its not a strong enough leaning for you to want to explore it thoroughly, when there are straight choices that appeal to you more. But you still are following an inborn desire.

Ive known thoroughly straight and thoroughly gay people. Ive also known Bisexuals who like both sexes equally, and Bisexuals who usually lean towards males, or usually lean towards females. A persons percentage of preference for gay or straight can clearly be 100%, 0%, 50%, or any percentage around 50%. Why can't it be 5% or 95%?

I'm certain that there are a few of those out there. If that is the case, then we have made some progress with regards to tolerance, acceptance and allowing others the right to choice - but not enough.

Interesting though that one would have any opinion on the matter of another person's sexual orientation based on what he/she does not understand or have any knowledge of.

Teenagers might be confused about their orientation while their hormones rage out of control but no, sexual orientation is determined before birth and activates at puberty, just like every other aspect of sexuality.

Besides, do you know of ANYONE who would intentionally chose something that will ruin their friendships, alienate them from their parents and possibly get them killed by hate groups?

I think people have always felt that way, they just were too scared to talk about it out loud. A lot of hate and oppression in a country that claims to be 'free'

I KNOW some teens do. They don't get laid at all, so gender preference isn't from experience. They generally tend to pick an image and run with it. There's so much gay political correctness pressure I think quite a few, mostly girls, just toss it out there that they are bi or lesbian. Once push comes to shove and they meet the right guy and get their first true taste of love, and not a crush, then they know what they truly are.

When they admit it they open themselves up to being picked on by others. I'm sure there is probably a few that will say it to rebel, but i believe the majority are genuine. Society today has become so sexualized with TV, movies and magazines. I think that brings out a natural curiosity for teens and some adults alike to want to experiment..

Even though I'm sure there are some teens who choose anything that gets them attention, I chose "no" because talking about those few iconoclasts diverts from the gay kids whose life is too miserable to have been "chosen".

I think this poll question is a real disservice to honest gay kids trying to survive an intolerant society.

But I do know some people who experiment with their sexuality, which is perfectly fine. They discover themselves and who they are. I've never met anyone who "chose" to be gay to be "different", straight women who kiss other straight women to attract guys (which I think is demeaning and really not helping kill the stereotype and myths), but never to be "different".

I don't think they do and I don't believe its something people choose in the first place.

Not sure what its like in America, but some of the comments I've seen on sodahead it doesn't seem everyone over there find it acceptable or cool, I'm sure they are still bullied a lot, here in the Ukraine it sure isn't considered cool and gays are harassed often.

I think it will get worse, because of all the gay issues in the news, it might be considered cool to be gay or bi in the near future. It could become a fad.

  • BHGOzzy Brad # ... 2012/06/06 20:04:30

You can't "choose" to be gay or bisexual any more then you can choose your gender. Teenagers suffer from raging hormones that confuse the issue but their sexual orientation is still determined before birth by hormones during the pregnancy.

So what, exactly, did I miss?

While I agree that people are born gay, my point is that teenagers will experiment more with homosexuality in the future because 1. It could be an act of rebellion or 2. It will become cool to be gay. Kids always like to be a part of a fad. So I never said that there will more teenagers choosing to be gay, just more experimenting with it because it's cool. Now, say your sorry for calling me an idiot.

At the rate things are going though, being straight is going to be the orientation that is least popular. At least in the teenager population.

It's not an oxymoron, how so?

If you're Christian, you're not supposed to be greedy, gluttonous, lie, steal, cheat, gamble, be drunk etc. yet doing any of the above doesn't make you not a Christian now does it?

I thought the whole point of Christianity was to be "accepting and forgiving" of people's "sins"?
