Are Marie Antoinette's Slippers Worth $81K?

A pair of Marie Antoinette's silk shoes were auctioned off in Paris last week for $81,000, which is more than five times what they were expected to sell for. The green-striped kitten heels came with a certificate of authenticity, which confirms that the former Queen of France actually wore them, before handing them down to her servant in 1775. What do you think? Is $81,000 too high of a price... or is it just right for a historical relic?

In my opinion, probably not. Factually? Absolutely.
Worth is determined by what people are willing to pay. Someone paid $81k and so that is what they are worth. The end.

I would have to have a detailed provenance, not just a certificate of authenticity, and see what condition the shoes are in before I would pay anything for them. After all, when it all boils down to it, they are used shoes.

Yes, she may be a famous historical figure and they may be an antique. But honestly, people- they're a pair of freaking SHOES. The whole idea of selling them at anywhere near 10k is preposterous itself, let alone 81-bloody-k. OMG.

Yes, since they're authentic historical antiques worn by a Queen. At the same time, instead of being auctioned off, I think they should be in a museum. I really hate it when they action historically famous articles off to regular people just because they have the dough to buy them. To me, that's totally selfish. Things like that should be put on view for all to enjoy.

basically an item is worth what one can get for it; if this is the price received than that is the worth, at least at this time. now if the question was 'what are they worth to you' that's an entirely different question and issue.

A things worth is only what someone is willing to pay for it. Obviously someone thought they were worth the money.

The fact that someone was fool enough to pay $81K for an ugly pair of shoes technically means that's what they were worth to that person. Did they come with Odor Eaters?

Maybe not 81k, but it certainly deserves a price that's up there.

But you should probably get a second opinion from Michelle Obama after she buys them with taxpayer money. She said something about them being hers in a previous life and that she just HAD to get them back at any cost to the peasants, I mean citizens !

It's a historical item; if you're into that sort of thing it's worth that much, and especially considering that Marie Antoinette was both revered and hated for her fashion sense. Not to mention, you can make money by allowing tours and museums to show them.
