We have to laugh to get past the pain of life's tragedies. I don't want to make fun of people with Alzheimer's Disease... I know people with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other memory problems.

From Yahoo Health:
Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. Alzheimer's disease (AD), is one form of dementia that gradually gets worse over time. It affects memory, thinking, and behavior.

Memory impairment, as well as problems with language, decision-making ability, judgment, and personality, are necessary features for the diagnosis.

my father has been diagnosed with Dementia/Alzheimer's and there is no way I can laugh at that and nor can anyone who has seen the destruction of a once vibrant and functioning human being most especially a parent.
I realize this is supposed humor but I'm sorry, I'm getting upset

Of course it's funny. It's a parody on Brad Pitt movies. It's no more about Alzheimers/ dementia as it is about Brad Pitt. Lighten up people. My Mum has Alzheimers with perhaps months to live. She is in a special ward and I visit 3 to 4 times a week. It's Christmas day today 2012 and I wore a silly hat and told my mother jokes for an hour over banana cake and tea. I got her to smile three times and it wasn't the banana cake. So long as they have help and a quality of life all you need to do is love them and have a laugh. It doesn't matter if the subject of the laugh is yourself or your Mum. Just love them

I will laugh for as long as I can recognize the punch line. I must say that it is not funny to people that are dealing with someone that is suffering from it.

I like a good laugh, but how is this any different from Polish jokes, what we used to refer to as "Spaz" jokes, blond jokes, etc.? We have gotten a lot more sensitive since then, I hope.

I get what you said. However, jokes are out when it comes to certain illness, like Alzheimer's.

I wouldn't place it into a "funny" category. I have lost two beautiful people from my life because of that blasted disease and I really hate it. But I can see where there can be some amusement along the way. Heck, laughter is good medicine for all of us. But I can't characterize these as hilarious jokes, merely amusing comments to lighten the mood somewhat. And it's not offensive. It is an attempt to humanize a terrible condition and bring people into the fold who are too afraid to approach. So it doesn't anger me as it might others, as I can see some good in it, so long as it's not overdone.

I hope someone sees this comment and it helps them.

There is help for Altheimer's Disease, it is the use of pure coconut oil.

    Not palm kernel oil.

It is supposed to be available at Wal-Mart or other health food stores or online.

I have heard of this also, from a doctor no less. I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies don't want the word getting out because they would lose precious profits. That anyone would put profits before healing is disgusting to me.

Hmm! Alzheimer disease is nothing to be laughing about. It is a serious problem for many older Americans. If you have ever witnessed it first hand it is extremely sad.

In one way or another I allow those who want to laugh to do so at all of life's travails. I've learned to laugh at my own fading capacity for memory. Some things are best forgotten anyway.

Actually, most things are best forgotten! The present is the only time that really matters. I, too, laugh when I have a memory lapse. Still, I am a bit concerned. . .

It's a painful situation for family and friends of those with Alzheimer but you have to laugh to get through it. If you can find the humor in any situation the pain of it will decrease.

Funny, but at my age, too close for comfort. I write down all the supplements Dr. Oz says will boost and preserve memory. Don't want to forget what they are. Now, if I can just find a warehouse to hold all the pills he pushes...

I'm 52 and I joke about myself getting old sometimes.

However, medical science is now learning that fasting once or twice a week protects against Alzheimers. There are several articles about it on the web - here's one of them:

I moved in to care for my father with this horrible disease and I can tell you there is nothing funny about someone I love dying a slow horrible death. I have been here and watched as he lost more and more function and now doesn't know who I am. It is not funny at all. On the lighter side sometimes we have to laugh to keep from crying.
