He was diagnozed with Alzheimers in 1994.... there is no evidence he himself supported the AWB in 1994....left wingers claim a generic letter typed up by an intern that had Reagan's name (as well as Fords and Carters) on it is proof he did. LOL

And what if he did? So What! Didn't the Congress and Billy Blow Job Clinton get that assault weapons ban in 1994 and what happened? Columbine and a few more school shootings. Proving that the law did not stop the crazy from doing evil. In fact 3% of all firearms crimes involve these so-called assault rifles. An assault rifle by DOD definition is a weapon that is select-fire and includes a full auto mode or three round burst. Civilians have never been able to own that type of weapon the scale that the anti-gun folks would like you to believe. This is an effort to control guns! When this ban expired, crime went down because now the citizens had a way to take on the bad guys with plenty of ammo to boot. Can you say you could stop 4 men from breaking into your house with a 5-6 shot revolver? Unless your name is Wyatt Earp or Wild Bill Hickock!
The liberals have changed the words to fit their agenda. First it was Global Warming and when they were disproved , they changed it to Climate Change to try and change the narrative. Same thing here, gun control is a red flag, so change it to gun violence and put some kids in front of you reading letters their parents wrote and make everyone who stands against Obama is not only a racist, but they hate kids too! It is all a ploy and many don't see it.
reading letters parents wrote stands obama racist hate kids ploy

Where the hell do you live that you consider the possibility of four men breaking into your home? I'd move away from there!

No El Paso and the neighborhood where I live is pretty safe despite the fact we are a major drug trafficking hub right across from Juarez,MX and their +50,000 deaths over the past 8 years. On our side, only 22 murders and 6 of them with a hand gun and no rifles were used at all. Besides, its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!!

Yes he supported it, and just like the current president he was wrong. But typically you libbies are blowing this out of proportion. Yes Reagan supported AWB but in 8 years as president he never once lost support of the NRA, which means, in spite of you libbies insinuation to the contrary, he and Obama aren't even in the same ballpark when it comes to the 2nd amendment. If Reagan's views on gun-rights were anywhere near as extreme as Obama's there is no way he would have gotten the NRA endorsement and thus no way he would have gotten the nomination. You libbies who think Regan would be considered a rino today need to do a little research. Now what can be questioned is whether JFK would be embraced by the dems today. Chances he would have been tossed aside the same way Lieberman was.

However, he didn't just want to ban assault weapons. He rightly wanted to ban their manufacture for public consumption. He didn't even want the things made in the first place for anyone except the military. He wasn't alone. What passes itself off as "Republican" today is nothing of the sort.

Actually Uncle Ron would be tossed under the Bus today if he was still around. (Just like Bob Dole). Shame the republican party is so crazy. Well maybe the libertarian party or the Green party will take over.

Here is a letter in 1994 that he, along with Carter and ford sent to congress asking them to pass the assault weapons ban

    http://articles.latimes.com/1...
The letter from three former presidents to the House:

    May 3, 1994

To Members of the U.S. House of Representatives:

We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. Although assualt weapons account for less than 1% of the guns in circulation, they account for nearly 10% of the guns traced to crime.

Every major law enforcement organization in America and dozens of leading labor, medical, religious, civil rights and civic groups support such a ban. Most importantly, poll after poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly support a ban on assault weapons. A 1993 CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 77% of Americans support a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of semi-automatic assault guns, such as the AK-47.

The 1989 import ban resulted in an impressive 40% drop in imported assault weapons traced to crime between 1989 and 1991, but the killing continues. Last year, a killer armed with two TEC9s killed eight people at a San Francisco law firm and wounded several others. During the past five...

During the past five years, more than 40 law enforcement officers have been killed or wounded in the line of duty by an assault weapon.

While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons.

    Sincerely,

    Gerald R. Ford

Why I'm for the Brady Bill
    By Ronald Reagan;

Ronald Reagan, in announcing support for the Brady bill yesterday,
reminded his audience he is a member of the National Rifle Association

    Published: March 29, 1991

The Brady bill would require the handgun dealer to provide a copy of the prospective purchaser's sworn statement to local law enforcement authorities so that background checks could be made. Based upon the evidence in states that already have handgun purchase waiting periods, this bill -- on a nationwide scale -- can't help but stop thousands of illegal handgun purchases.
    ---------
Every year, an average of 9,200 Americans are murdered by handguns, according to Department of Justice statistics. This does not include suicides or the tens of thousands of robberies, rapes and assaults committed with handguns.

This level of violence must be stopped. Sarah and Jim Brady are working hard to do that, and I say more power to them. If the passage of the Brady bill were to result in a reduction of only 10 or 15 percent of those numbers (and it could be a good deal greater), it would be well worth making it the law of the land.
