I learned in a journalism class in college a couple years ago that most papers and magazines are written at an 8th grade reading level.

I think it's sixth grade. Sadly that's where most people in the country are, which means they don't have a high enough reading level to understand and properly follow the label on prescription drugs. Scary thought.

I'm not certain about American school levels, but I would say most papers and mags are written toward the 12-14 year-old level, whatever school level that is called in America. Even in the UK, at least magazines are written at that level. I believe they don't assume most people are university graduates, so they're not written to that level.

It used to be 8th grade. Don't know if that's changed - but seems it may be 6th grade in some papers & magazines.

I think it totally depends on the newspaper and magazine that you choose to read.

I've heard that, too. It's glaringly obvious in most popular magazines/journals.

5th grade level. Even then, a lot of people would prefer to be told the news instead of reading it.

about 8th grade level except for the New York Times which can be high school and above. The New York Post, on the other hand, is about 4th grade level.
