Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

- A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.... Read full article »

Private school, private rules. Wouldn't be MY choice for one of MY kids (if I had any) but if you're going to stick your kid into a private school that forbids dancing and (shades of the '50's) "rock music" :::gasp::: then... that's the choice you make, and the agreements are between you and the (private) school. If this were a public school, my reply would be substantially different.

As an over protective Christian mother of three, I feel this is truly none of the schools business, but rather the parents. Since I feel the government shouldn’t meddle in the rights of the parents, I also feel that a private environment shouldn’t either. Granted, if the parents and student were aware of the school’s polices, then this should be of no surprise to all parties involved; surly they had a choice as to what school their child would attend, it was not forced upon them. Nevertheless, my children attend a Catholic school and my husband and I have agreed to the school’s policies, while, we have always made it clear to all that WE are the parents.

I don't think the school should have control over what this young man does outside of school, whether he goes to a prom or not is not the concern of the school he is free to do whatever he wants so long as it is not illegal. This school is taking religion to the extreme and it's outrageous!

They don't even play rock music at Findlay's prom.
It's all a bunch of rap and hip hop.
I should know. I go to FHS.

If he signed something he is a minor so it should only be enforceable if his parent's signed it. That being said if he and his parent's signed an agreement and are violating that agreement he should be suspended.

If his parent's knew nothing about this and don't have a problem with him going to the prom they should fight it.

The principal signed the release as required , if HE was not going to apply the rules to himself HE should not have signed.

Tyler followed the rules of the school by bringing the form to the principal to be signed.Even though this activity had nothing to do with his school.TYLER did as HE was suppose to,HIS principal should have done the same and Tyler should have been permitted to Graduate with his class without repercussions.

My opinion on this is...he goes to the school and he knows the rules. He can change schools if he doesn't like the rules. Why would he go to the school anyway?

Schools shouldn't have that much control over a students life. Once their students go to college, who is going to make their decessions for them? People need to make stupid mistakes, thats how we learn. When we touch the stove we learn it hurts, so we don't do it again.

Even private schools need to be given a limit.
