John McCain may be a racist, but how does that square with their adopting a black child? And if racism means painting an entire group with the same brush, how does the writer explain his comment "what else can we expect from a party (Republican) that promotes racism, homophobia, and discriminates against anyone with a different skin color, sexual orientation, or ethnic origin?" It seems that the writer is ready and willing to paint all Republicans with the same brush. Or perhaps the writer sees the Republican David Duke (whom the Republican leadership disavows) in a different light than Robert Byrd, the KKK leader (whom the Democratic leadership has never disavowed). That is the value of a double standard in politics. The ability to see the flaws in the other side while missing the same or similar issues in your own side. But then I guess anyone who is comfortable with the Clintons probably has a different set of values all together. None of this excuses John McCain from the type of behavior described in this question, but McCain grew up in a time that was well before the arrival of our politically correct world and a different behavior was acceptable (to some). He should get a pass on his use of the word "Gook" . I cannot imagine where my head would be if I had endured the kind of treatment he and others went through as a POW. I think using Gook to describe those who tortured me would be the least of my failings.
