And at the recent G20 summit the Obama administration was praised by economists from around the world for stopping a world wide depression in its tracks with the coordinated stimulus program. Is this a great President or what! Don't bother to respond you clearly have a fixation with hating this guy that won't allow you to see any of the things he has accomplished. (more)

Or at least as much as possible. For me nothing surpasses the encompassing experience of a large screen and a darkened theater. I have been fortunate enough to live places where their was a wide selection of options including venues for foreign, independent and classic films. I still rent movies but I prefer the total experience when possible. I can't stand to watch movies on TV that are constantly interrupted by commercials, edited, had the run time lengthened to squeeze in more commercials or where there is a "ghost" advertisement on the screen or periodic pop-ups advertising other programs. I like to go to the movies precisely to get away from that. I want to be lost in the story not a detached observer. (more)

This is a complicated question. Our current system is the worst possible combination. Health Care for most Americans is already rationed, they just don't know it. The rationing takes place by denying coverage to the poor, the elderly and children, while denying legitimate insurance claims for those of us who can afford health insurance but who cannot afford the lawyer it takes to contest rejection of "usual and customary" claims. Not getting the optimum care they need, on the other hand, children, elderly and the poor suffer from chronic and degenerative diseases that may have been curable in earlier stages but which finally end up costing us all dearly when they get really sick. On the other hand the wealthy and the lucky few with good insurance sometimes get more care than they need with expensive tests and procedures that aren't really necessary. Much of the "rationing" that would occur in Health Care reform would be to eliminate unnecessary and wasteful procedures that drive up the cost for tax payers while making the insurance companies rich. It is no accident that insurance companies countinue to increase their record profit margins while actually providing less and less coverage for fewer and fewer people. Planned rationing rather than the current rationing would make sure that everyone who wants it can have a minimum standard of health care while insuring that all of us, including the federal government, don't go broke. The cliche is true. Democrats want to tax and spend but Republicans want to borrow and spend. They honestly still believe in the Laffer Curve and Supply Side Economics even though it has been proven again and again that you cannot keep cutting taxes for the rich and still have enough money to balance the budget and run the government. They really do want something for nothing. (more)

The irony is that toward the end of the life cycle of Republican intellectualism we repeatedly heard, "You can't solve problems by throwing money at them." Now every single problem can be solved by capitalism and letting the market decide, which of course has meant that the gap between rich and poor has reached dangerous proportions and the U.S. now has less social mobility than any other industrialized nation including Great Britain. When conservatism decided that reforming the human condition was no longer a goal it bought into the idea that less altruistic motivations were all that was necessary. Beginning with the credo that greed is good all other values have been usurped by a power hungry commercialized corporate agenda that makes democracy impotent. Yes, conservatism is dead. (more)

It is easier to believe that all the problems of the world, or even my own slight dissatisfactions in life, are caused by external or outside influences. This keeps me from having to do the hard work of making myself a better person and it absolves me of the responsibility of making the world a better place for others to live in. I can just keep supporting an out of control military budget, not worry about health care, education or the environment, and say hateful things about people who are not like me, and I will have done my part, freeing me to use my TV remote and my radio dial to tune in people who feel just like me and make me feel good about not changing a thing. As some will no doubt point out there has been lots of crazy conspiracy stuff that has clouded this investigation for years. I have no answers but a few things give me pause and leave me with more questions than answers. Why is it that Jack Ruby's relationship with Lee Harvey Oswald is always written off with little explanation and simply dismissed as inconsequential? How is it that Lee Harvey Oswald after spending time in Cuba and being tracked in the Soviet Union as an agent is able to so easily get back into this country, no questions asked?

Finally there is all of that official government information that is only supposed to be released after so many generations some of which was released only in the last couple of years. One tidbit that begs for more information is the government admission that a famous organized crime syndicate was involved in the plot to kill Kennedy.
I am skeptical of conspiracy theories but the problem with this story is that some things just don't add up. What does one do when the official explanation for something has as many holes as the conspiracy theorists have? (more) -

The closest thing to a slasher movie that I have ever liked was the original Psycho. Unfortunately most people have had that movie spoiled for them by seeing endless discussions on documentaries that play all of the key scenes over and over. Other than that I like the original Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein and the original Dracula. These have wonderful atmospherics. I like psychological horrors like the original The Haunting, and The Innocents. There is an old Hammer movie called The Abominable Snowman which is a wonderfully eerie suspense piece. The original King Kong is still my favorite especially the island scenes. More modern movies that worked for me include Rosemary's Baby and a comedy called The Fearless Vampire Killers. The Exorcist is a classic but like lots of good horror movies tends to lose its bunch because too many scenes have been replayed over and over on documentaries. There was a modern retelling of Nosferatu the name of which escapes me which was quite entertaining. The Shinning was good when I saw it in the theater but again has been overexposed on TV shows. Most of the slasher movies that make people's top ten lists leave me angry or underwhelmed. They are predictable, employ cheap manipulation and rely too much on blood and guts. The problem with that is that it tends to numb a person so that they require more and more gore "to get off." Movies that make the effort at a psychological twist or in building real suspense get my appreciation much quicker. (more) -
