I understand that during the frontier age, people were violent and men killed other men left and right. I get that. But the level of cruelty that Christopher Columbus exhibited was irredeemable. You know how when (racist )people think of Indians, they think of scalping? Were you aware that the Native Americans never scalped anyone until Columbus came? In order to teach the natives a lesson and show an example of what would happen if they disobeyed, Columbus would publicly scalp Native Americans. They had never heard of this disgusting concept and only did it back in retaliation years later. He also would give them blankets filled with disease to weed them out. Columbus would also regularly disfigure women and children, cutting off their arms or hands left and right. He came to this nation and exterminated thousands and thousands. He brought a genocide to this country and yet we celebrate him? I hate to be age-ist, but most of the Columbus supporters are older. That's because most young people were taught in school how terrible he really was. Historians have come around to the fact that he was a horrible, horrible man. I understand that if it wasn't for him, the planet wouldn't be the same and I surely wouldn't be here. But, it makes me wonder if the world would have been a different, much better place without him.
