With a drawing you have to work Front to Back. With paint you work Back to Front.

I was thinking "Which one?" but I forgot that I removed a lot of images of my work earlier this year. So now I have only one painting...thanks for the compliment!

View all 230 comments »Think of reflections when you paint...you're not actually painting the inside of the bottle but what your observer sees. Very difficult, yes, I know what you're talking about.
Find a Mason jar, fill the lower part (1/3) with sand or pebbles...don't use gravel. Then put a large bloom of a flower, petals facing towards you. Now here is the hard part, you have to look at this jar realizing that not only does it reflect but refracts as well. You have to identify each and every shape your eye witnesses. Remember you're transferring a 3D image (your eyes) to a 2D plane (the canvas).
Oil is very forgiving as a medium. I usually work in tempera and acrylics. I have to work fast and the paint has to dry quickly. Every painting I do has to be done within 6 to 8 hours...fun huh?
Hint:
When you paint a tree, figure the shape (where you want it to be), paint light colored leaves in the background. Then draw/paint the trunk and branches over that...usually a darker color with a little gray highlights. Then paint the forward leaves. Add highlights to those as well...keep in mind the sun angle/shadows. This will give you a 3D effect for the trees.
Racefish, be messy with paint. You'll discover things you never knew!
Don't be afraid to paint!!!!!!
God Bless
