Having a part of your body amputated just because of a possibility of cancer sounds insane. Think of what a 60-80% increased risk really means: it means a 60-80% greater chance of getting breast cancer as compared to all other women, not a 60-80% chance of getting cancer, period. And even if it the risk was that great, all anyone should do is monitor their health more frequently, so that if something is discovered, it can be detected early and dealt with promptly. (more)

    +5 raves ... because a lot of Americans have their heads up their asses when it comes to the government do... ... because a lot of Americans have their heads up their asses when it comes to the government doing anything other than going to war or arresting and jailing people, and they don't even want to admit that it takes taxes (and lots of them, or massive debt) to do those two things. Many Americans also suspect that the people in government also have their heads up their asses when it comes to administering anything else other than those two things, and I suspect that they may be partly correct, because the gov't often has it's head up it's ass about doing those things as well!

    Seriously, people watch too much Fox News and listen to too much right wing talk radio to understand that there are two main types of universal health care, and only one of them is "socialized medicine." This is what they have in England, where doctors are essentially government employees. The other type is "single payer," which doesn't turn doctors into public employees, but turns the government into an insurance company, as in Canada. This could best be described as "socialized health insurance," where private insurance companies are cut out of the business of health care, where they truly don't belong, and have wreaked havoc on our health system.
