Congratulations on your anniversary and best wishes to you and your husband and good luck on your trip to Europe. You will find both Germany and Poland fascinating countries, so different in many aspects and so much alike in others.
As for the languages, I really had no choice but learn them. I was born Polish and it is my fiirst language. In school from 3rd grade up we had to learn Russian. I learned some German when I used to regularly, almost every Friday take the train from Szczecin in Poland to Nuebrandenburg in Germany. I was into photography at that time and was shopping there for supplies. I also met a German girl who worked in the area and we talked quite a lot so I sort of learned enough to get by. It helped me later when I went to West Germany to town of Bad Soden near Frankfurt where I spent some time with my family on the way to the USA. Once in America I had to learn English and that is how I get to speak more than one language.
