About Me

Entrepreneur, former HS teacher, belly dancer, political cynic, animal-lover, strong advocate of religious freedom which includes ALL religions - or to not believe in anything at all.

Nowadays, open-minded people.

Historical: Akbar the Great (for his inclusive religious outlook), Nero (was he really fiddling about?), Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Boudicca (a real kick-arse woman), Hatshepsut (another KAW), Ramses II... and I'm sure I'll add more later.

See "Interests."

Reading, ancient civilizations, religious studies, politics, wilderness hikes, eclectic friends, good wines and an occasional cigar. I also like archery and guns, but only for target practice. If I had to kill my own food I'd be vegetarian!

Classical, fusion jazz, folkloric.

The Lehrer News Hour
Heroes
24 (the politics suck but I love Kiefer Sutherland)
Warriors (yeah, baby!)
UFO Hunters (what a hoot!)
SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek Enterprise

He Died With a Falafel In His Hand; (hilarious Australian social commentary)
Anything by director Peter Greenaway
The Year of Living Dangerously
The Namesake
The Lives of Others
Paprika (not normally an anime fan, but I love the surrealism of this one)
Lars and the Real Woman
Queen of the Damned (OK, I like a good vampire story)
Charlie Wilson's War

"The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. "The horror... the horror."

"The Torture Team" by Philippe Sands, a British barrister. All you wanted to know - or maybe not - about the legitimization of torture by the last administration.

"Chronicle of the Pharaohs" by Peter Clayton.

Anything by J.R.R. Tolkien.

"Never try to teach a pig to sing; it's a waste of your time and it annoys the pig."
~ Mark Twain

"It is impossible to say something in such a way that it cannot be misunderstood."
~ Carl Popper

Facilis descensus Averno. (Latin proverb: "The way to Hell is easy.")

The dogs that starve at the master's gate
Predict the ruin of the state.

  • Yeah they just don't make good music anymore! Alot of the music today is just the same recipe over and over. Nobody plays instruments anymore either. Its just a fashion/dance show for an MTV(boy did they end up being disappointing) video or something.

  • You're welcome. I see you're a belly dancer. Decades ago we had a middle eastern deli and restaurant and we had belly dancers, ethnic folk dancing (mainly Greek & Armenian) and live middle eastern music.

  • Great choices for historical figures whom it would be interesting meet. And love your quotes - especially the line from Blake, perhaps the most unrecognized mind of Western civilization. If someone claimed there was proof Blake came "from somewhere else," this often-skeptical individual would not dismiss the claim out of hand until seeing the evidence. Blake is one of the few who seems like he was just incarnated here while on his way to some other stop out in a universe much bigger, wilder and stranger than even theoretical physicists could ever guess.

"Do what you will, this world's a fiction and is made up of contradiction."

universe bigger wilder stranger theoretical physicists guess worlds fiction contradiction

    (And thanks for the add.)

I agree totally with this analysis. I'm all for supporting Pakistan in fighting the Taliban, but not with the blood of our young soldiers. Afghanistan is called "The graveyard of great nations" for good reason; it's a rat's nest of inhospitable terrain and feuding tribes. It's impossible to fight a conventional war there and win.

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
~ Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), "The Young British Soldier"

However, we have somewhat highly-evolved brains that should counteract this effect. Some of us just choose not to use them.

Now, if you're stuck with them at work, then you have to learn some manipulative and coping devices of your own in order to deal with them. Or find a new job.

I think there may be a message in this, that we should all try to go a little "greener" by growing some of our own food. I'd like to do this myself since I can't afford to buy organic all the time! In light of the recent scares about our food sources (spinach, tomatoes, peanut butter) it's nice to know where your food comes from.

A good friend of mine grows most of her own food and bow-hunts deer with her BF. They're not "survivalists," they do it to be more connected with the whole process of Life - something our modern society has gotten out of touch with. I'm still too much of a weenie to kill something, but my friend said she would help me set up a raised-bed planter for gardening in my back yard. I think I may take her up on that.
