I think the $8000 tax credit for first time homebuyers and the $6500 tax credit for qualified repeat homebuyers is a step in the right direction. Home sales are up and the economy grew 3.5% in the third quarter, the largest growth in two years. It's just a matter of time before unemployment is reduced. (more)

The last Democrat elected to a House seat from the region was Frances E. Spinner, who represented St. Lawrence County in Congress from 1855 to 1857.
    . . .
The results also struck a blow for the Republican Party, which not only lost the district, but exposed a bitter national divide within the party between its moderate and conservative factions.

"This race turned out to be the worst of all possible worlds for Republicans as not only did the Democrat, Bill Owens, win a seat that Democrats have not held in more than 100 years, but what occurred in New York has exposed a war within the Republican Party that will not soon end," said Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

    This part is interesting:
    ----------------------
The idea would give insurance companies a defined period to make changes in order to help cover more people and drive down long-term costs. But if those changes failed to occur within the defined period, a trigger would provide for creating a public option to force change on the insurance companies.

"This option would be available from day one in any state where -- after market and insurance reforms are implemented -- affordable, competitive plans still do not exist," she said in a press release.
    ----------------------

Somewhere I had heard the defined period would be five years. I was thinking this might be too much time. By that time the party in power may change and those in charge may be a lot more sympathetic to the insurance companies.

    For example:

During the 2000 Republican primary, a there was a telephone poll conducted which asked the question,

"Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?"

What the pollster did not mention was that McCain adopted a dark-skinned girl from Bangladesh, but, of course, what the pollster was trying to imply was that the girl was McCain's illegitimate child.

Consequently, McCain lost the primary to George Bush.
