We're lucky to have a first lady of this caliber, with a world-class education, compassion for our citizens, and courage to stand up and make a big difference. I'm so happy she's not going to be a shrinking violet. It would be the largest national shame if we did not have access to her talents and passions, just because conservatives usually prefer first ladies to have a more "ladylike" focus like education and lunches with ladies. I studied my 4th year in Spain, and when I came back, I was sure I didn't want a career in the field I was studying. I took a year off, worked and saved money for school, and then the next year I went back and finished in 6 months. I took 10 years off, working my way up in a field that didn't have a degree yet (PC database programming and IT, software development and management), and then I went back and got an MBA in technology management. That one took 3 years. Then about 10 years after that I went to law school. I paid for all of it myself, using a combination of loans and my own savings. (more) -

The people who use it are just repeating GOP talking points, unimaginatively comparing all Democrats to the Jim Jones mass suicide to try to write off all voters as mindless followers. It's just a mean-spirited way to insult people who you disagree with, and it's been used so many times now that it's just white noise by angry, sore losers with extremist ideology. (more)

When I was a teenager, I used to wish I would be dead so I would get to hear what people thought about me at my funeral. Fortunately, I was so depressed and self-loathing at the time that I was more afraid that NO ONE would show up to my funeral at all, making my death be in vain. So I didn't go ahead and actually try to do myself in.
Thank God. Because after high school, everything got better. I learned that I couldn't control how other people felt about me, so I had to learn to love myself enough for the whole world. And when I learned to love myself, I realized that my friends and family members loved me all along, but I couldn't see it before. I was so sure everyone hated me, that all I allowed myself to see was their cruelty and disdain. I never noticed the occasional acts of kindness. I never thanked them for it. I was looking for the next cruelty, and missed all the good stuff.
I apologized later to them that my negative focus had made me filter out all the good stuff before.
The short answer: it doesn't really matter "how much" someone else cares about you. What matters is that YOU care about you, and that you just receive and enjoy the love from other people around you without judging or measuring it. It's all good, and it's all joy. Relax and enjoy. (more) -

I think Carter struggled with the Iran terrorist kidnappings and the explosive inflation during his presidency, and those 2 issues cost him the election. But he has been a superb statesman after his time in office, and with the exception of a few rogue international visits that were embarrassing to Clinton while he was in office, he has been a major contributor to world peace and working toward solving homelessness in this country.
Plus, we tend to look at life through rose-colored glasses, and forget the mistakes of the past. (more) -

Personally, I prefer to choose words that I believe truthfully represent my thoughts, and that don't incite riots just because they are the most vivid, extreme representations possible.
We all have a responsibility to communicate effectively. If you are choosing words that you know damn well are going to anger people, you're not being "honest." You're being vindictive and vicious, and you're choosing those words with the explicit intent to do the most injurious damage to others.
You can make a point without stabbing people in the eyes. If you think the only way to honesty is to be blunt, rude and insulting, then you are sadly mistaken.
Now, if by political correctness you are referring to people who obfuscate the truth completely by being so afraid to hurt other's feelings that they feel a need to draw happy faces, sunshine and rainbows on every thought, then yeah, I agree, it's just dishonest to pretend that something is what it isn't.
A lot more rational discussion can occur in the middle, where we are pragmatically discussing issues while not intentionally using words that we know damn well will set other people off. (more) -

When you see him at lunch, say, "Hey, Nick, I ended up getting 2 of these. Want one?" It's not very forward, but it's a conversation starter. You can ask what he thinks about one of his teachers or classes, even if you are not in the same one." Good luck! (more)
