Through the years, organized religions have become more like businesses (selling post-life insurance). They seem to have gone seriously astray, perhaps because of their size. They are also increasingly intolerant of one another even though they preach many of the same basic tenets.

    This trend has left ever more people increasingly disillusioned with organized religion, yet they have not abandoned their core belief in a supreme diety. They just cannot reconcile their belief with today's religious institutions.

    The early stages of a religion's development are its most meaningful. Once it has grown, an hierarchy develops, which then becomes a beauracracy. It is at this stage which the religion begins to lose its original focus and, ultimately, its relevance. It becomes an institution promoting a belief system rather than a system of beliefs by which one can lead one's life.

America was a debtor nation during the rapid industrialization following the Civil War, but used the borrowed money to build an economic juggernaut which became the worlds largest creditor nation. After WWII, we sat on our laurels and slowly watched as our pre-eminent postion melted away. We went from the "arsenal of democracy" to the worlds biggest debtor nation; how much of our vital defense industry is now dependent on the same foreign powers? I'd hate to hazard a guess. (more)
