I guess I would *prefer* living in a Jeffersonian democracy, but really, I see so many fatal flaws (both ethical and utilitarian) in the idea of democracy itself that I don't think I could ever allow myself to become a part of that "we." I've withdrawn my consent from the system and embraced more of an Individualist-Anarchist philosophy, though Benjamin Tucker himself did once half-jokingly describe Anarchists as "unterrified Jeffersonian Democrats." House of 1,000 Corpses had one of the most compelling and entertaining (not to mention profanity-laden) DVD menus ever. I must have watched that thing five times straight before I even started the movie!

In my personal opinion, it's a far safer, more positive experience than a lot of *legal* drugs I could name. Also, in my case, it's certainly not a gateway drug, as I've never even touched another illicit substance, nor do I intend to. Just gimmie my herb, my morning coffee, and a glass of wine with dinner, and I'm a happy guy! ;-) (more)

I'm a Voluntaryist, so I don't really believe in politics, or even in government in general as a solution to any set of social or economic problems; but if I must be governed, I would hope it would be by somebody who respects the natural rights and liberties of individuals to live their lives in whatever ways they wish, as long as they don't hurt anybody else.

Bearing this in mind, my ideal President would find it unconscionable to lock people in cages for engaging in non-violent, consensual activities, and would recognize that the only legitimate function of the state is in protecting people and their property from coercion and aggression. The only prominent national politician I feel has this kind of grasp of Natural Law, and the compassion and where-with-all to not be corrupted by the office, is Dr. Ron Paul.

I read a quote once (I think it was Mark Twain, but I'm not sure) that went something like, "the man who wants to be President is someone to whom the job should never be given. The man who doesn't want to be President is someone who should be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the office." (more)

The alternative would be that mentally challenged people would have their children stolen from them, or that they'd at least be susceptible to this threat. However precarious the upbringing of such children might be, I would have a very hard time accepting the premise that governments have any legitimate right to kidnap children from non-abusive parents.
