+2 raves I am very allergic to Penicillin. About 20 years ago I went to my doctor with a pretty severe ca... I am very allergic to Penicillin. About 20 years ago I went to my doctor with a pretty severe case of the flu. He prescribed a drug that contained Penicillin, even though it was written on my chart in GREAT BIG LETTERS that I was allergic. I didn't question him and took the drug. Fortunately, my reaction was hives over 90% of my body, not anything more serious. But when I went to the pharmacy to find out why I had hives, the very first question he asked was what was I taking. I told him, then he asked if I was allergic to Penicillin. I said yes and he told me to stop taking the drug immediately. Well, when I called my doctor on it, he just said that he didn't know what he prescribed had Penicillin and that he was sorry. Well, from that point forward, I have not trusted the first opinion I have gotten from ANY doctor. To me, it's just common sense.

Since the side effects were available, the patient is, at the very least, partially responsible. Too many people in the US today are sue-happy. It's time to start being more aware of medical procedures and drug side effects. All it takes is a little time and education. I believe the main reason more people aren't proactive like that is because they trust their doctors (which is really not a bad thing), they are lazy and most importantly, they lack common sense.
