About Me
I was a General Manager of a small business (65 employees) in Minnesota for 30 years and Vice President of operations for a medium size business (250 employees) for 5 years. I became a consultant to several large business firms for three years. I worked out of my home for one year in 1997 for a firm in Boston, MA writing government proposals and contracts. I should have been able to retire at the age of 65 but due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to work for an additonal 5 years. I am 70 years old and retired on August 31, 2008. The same day I retired I took up residence in Florida. The additional 5 years of savings into my IRA was wiped out in the financial crises of October, 2008. My IRA is back where it was in 2003.

  • Hey, TCS.

    Thanks for the rave.

I'm a Navy vet, also. I served for seven years, though not in destroyers.

It's always great to hear from a fellow sailor.

  • I am retired from the USMC and USN, too. I spent 22 1/2 years and retired as a CWO4 aviation electronics officer. Like you I had a second career too, I went to law school nights my last three years on a shore tour, and practiced law until last year when I retired to Idaho.

I have also read the book "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" about the Battle of Leyte Gulf - the battle off Samar, and it was the Navy's finest hour! There is a monument to Taffy Three in San Diego at the Eighth Street Mole, just across from the USS Midway museum. It lists all of the ships involved and has a bust of Admiral Sprague. It is a "must-see" if you ever get to San Diego.

  • Thanks for the rave!!!

  • Its spelled "James A. Michener"....you might change in your bio above that especially if you're claiming to be a fan as I am.

I'm always amazed how seemingly bright people like you can so firmly believe in the republican economic platform. Seriously and without insult, why do you think that 'trickle down"actually works when the very skewed distribution of wealth (all assets plus income) in the USA has changed very little since the Great Depression? The poor keep getting poorer and the rich keep getting richer...while the middle class (my class) keeps getting smaller. That doesn't sound like the trickle-down concept is working to me. The only time it changed was the Clinton economic Boom of the 1990's and that reversed itself when the Bush Bust began...thanks for that lemon Republicans in Florida.

And why do you like Teddy Roosevelt. Admittedly he did some good things but he drug our nation into several needless militrary excursions as a congressman, president and later as a private citizen. What threat did the Philippines hold for the USA? I view him as another American cowboy who really just wanted to start Sh*t for reasons other than any national necessity...like GW except TR was smart and won.

Anyway, best to you. Thanks for serving.

  • I am very sad this morning. I have a great admiration for Colin Powell and feel very betrayed by his decision to endorse Barack Obama. This could be the final "Nail in the Coffin" for John McCain and Sarah Palin. The first thing that came to my mind was New World Order. I have never looked at the term before but this morning is a good time. Where could I go to find information on the term? OK, let's try Wikipedia. Here is what I found: New World Order refers to a conspiracy in which a powerful and secretive group is plotting to eventually rule the world via an autonomous world government, which would replace sovereign states and other checks and balances in world power struggles. In this theory, many significant occurrences are said to be caused by a powerful secret group or groups. Historical and current events are seen as steps in an on-going plot to rule the world primarily through a combination of political finance, social engineering, mind control, and fear-based propaganda.
    History of the term:

The modern use of the phrase "new world order" originated in the early 20th century with Cecil Rhodes, who advocated that the British Empire and the United States should jointly impose a Federal World Government (with English as the official language) to bring about lasting world "peace".[6] A sinister motive is seen in the fact that Rhodes founded the Rhodes Scholarship as a global brotherhood of future leaders. Bill Clinton is a Rhodes Scholar. Lionel Curtis, who also believed in this idea, founded the Round Table movement in 1909, which led to the establishment of the British-based Royal Institute for International Affairs in 1919 and the U.S.-based Council on Foreign Relations in 1921. The concept was further developed by Edward M. House, a close advisor to Woodrow Wilson during the negotiations to set up the League of Nations (it is unclear whether it was House or Wilson who invented the actual phrase). Another important influence was the author H.G. Wells, a vigorous advocate for world government.

One official mention which has garnered attention was in Gerald Ford's "Declaration of Interdependence" on 24 October 1975; according to the ex-general counsel of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Peter Beter, the Declaration of Interdependence states that: We must join with others to bring forth a new world order... Narrow notions of national sovereignty must not be permitted to curtail that obligation.

Elements are present in the populism of the nineteenth century. In present form this can be traced to the collapse of the Soviet Union and President George H. W. Bush's new world order speech of 11 September 1990. In it he described the United States' objectives for post-cold-war cooperation with the former Soviet Union, using the phrase new world order.

Alternative names for the New World Order are used by theorists: Illuminati Bankers, High Cabal, Fourth Reich, Synarchist International, the Cryptocracy, the Power Elite, and the powers that be.

I think the United States and Great Britain will no longer be the leaders of the New World Order. With the pending election of Barack Obama, he will concede this leadership to China, Iran, Venzuela, Bolivia and Russia. We have already seen the bigging of this shift with the current economic crises in the United States. When Wall Street gets the "sniffles" the rest of the world comes down with Pneumonia.
