About Me

My Name is David Elmo Sawyer. I am widowed, divorced, widowed, and divorced. I have had several careers: printing press repairman in the Army, custodian (2 years), calender operator (16 years), and computer programmer (7 years). I was the next to last Western Union bicycle messenger in Salem, Oregon before I went into the Army.

I was raised in my grandparents' Community Church, then after the fourth grade, in a neighbor's Baptist Church. I loved the Bible from an early age, heavily influenced, I believe, by my Dad's mother. I went to a Christian high school, then a Baptist 2-year Liberal Arts college. I studied Greek, and then Hebrew. I learned for myself that God lives and that the Bible is His written word. I also learned that my church at the time had a doctrine that was not supported by the Bible. I found the Salvation Army and joined it. After my first wife died, I found that one of the SA doctrines was also not supported by the Bible. I looked through a number of churches and with each one, I learned new things from the Bible, but found that the churches had other doctrines that the Bible didn't support. I began considering starting my own church where the Bible only doctrines could be taught. Then someone asked me what I thought of the Book of Mormon. Well, I told him I thought Joseph Smith probably believed what he taught but was deceived by the devil, basically, what I had been taught as a Baptist youth. He said, "You'll have to read the Book of Mormon, pray about it, and ask God if it is true." That made me think. That is exactly what I had done with the Bible. I knew God answered prayers, if made sincerely. So I did what he said. God gave me the answer and I found that all those things I had learned from the Bible in other churches were present in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was baptized in 1975.

I weigh 320 pounds and am gradually losing weight. I am arthritic, diabetic, and hypertensive, have neuropathy in my feet and hands, but otherwise I consider my health to be good.

I have been living in an adult foster care home for over two years now. After living in a nursing home for the previous two years, it feels much freer.

I use my computer in my room for writing and studying. I chiefly use my standard wheelchair when I go out alone, but when being driven by others I can often make out with just a walking stick (not a cane).

I like taking pictures wherever I am. I am working on a novel (got a long way to go).

I have maintained a website since June of 2003, though it has moved a couple of times. It is currently My Title of Liberty. It started out as a sort of floppy disk portfolio, now it has over 250 pages and I don't know how many photos.

I'll know them when I meet them.

I love music, photography, computers, astronomy - not astrology, nature, the Zoo, reading, and writing poetry, letters, and my novel.

I play a harmonica. In the past, I have played: a B-flat horn, a guitar. I sing karaoke at home quite often. No one has complained, in fact they encourage me.

I have a 5 mega-pixel digital camera with a 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. I chose it especially for taking photos of the Moon and planets.

I started with personal computer in 1983. My first computer was a Radio Shack PC-1, a pocket computer with a 24-character readout that could be programmed in BASIC. After that, I got a Timex-Sinclair 1000, a VIC-20, a Commodore 128, an IBM-compatible laptop in 1989, and my first 486 in 1992. I've had three other computers since then. Currently, I have a Dell with Vista that my son bought for me (I am gradually paying him back) and an HP Pavillion laptop that still works but gives an "Imminent Hard Drive Failure" message each time it boots up.

I visit the Oregon Zoo four to six times a year with my wheelchair and take photos.

I Like: Beatles, BeeGees, Beach Boys, Peter Paul & Mary
Vocal Artists:
Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Barbra Streisand, John Denver
Favorite Songs: "My Heart Will Go On", "Annie's Song", "The Marvelous Toy", "Could I Have This Dance?"

As Time Goes By, To the Manor Born, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Doctor Who, CSI (any of them), Ned's Declassified, Life with Derek, Hanna Montana

Serenity, Joe versus the Volcano, National Treasure, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, I just saw Mr. Majorium's Wonder Emporium and I recommend it!

The Bible and Book of Mormon, Anything by Isaac Asimov or Immanuel Velikovsky, Most of the works of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, The Harry Potter books, and yes, I liked The DaVinci Code.

" ... the desire of the righteous shall be granted." - Proverbs 16:24

"Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." - Luke 15:31

Jesus Christ, My Parents (now 79), Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Immanuel Velikovsky, The faithful leaders of my Church, past and present, and anyone who stands up for doing what they believe to be right.

  • Tom,

Well, I've gone through this many times before here, but I'll do it again for you.

There are three words in the original texts, one, Hebrew (sheol), and two Greek (hades & gehenna), that are translated into English as Hell.

Both sheol and hades mean the grave, or the abode of the spirits of the dead. They do not refer themselves to suffering or bliss, unless that is specified by other words with them.

Gehenna is Greek for the Valley of Hinnom, outside of and below the city of Jerusalem where the city's trash was burned day and night. That definitely refers to suffering and destruction.

When the rich man found himself in hades, he found that it was divided by a gulf. He was on the side that was for tortured spirits, while he could see Lazarus in Abraham's bosom on the other side.

Ultimate Hell as in the modern idea is for the end of time, after Christ reigns on earth for a thousand years and all mankind have been resurrected, when God consigns Satan and all who follow him to the Lake of Fire and Brimstone where they will remain forever.

  • I know what this feels like...I lost my grand mother 2 years ago...The pain and Joy I feel when I remember her is as strong as the day that I lost her. It's a very confusing emotion, grief. Part of our human experience. My prayers are with you and your family.

  • You might not know me, but sometimes word from a stranger can be meaningful, I am terribly sorry about your loss, but if you look at it this way, he is in a much better place with the best caretaker there is, the creator of us all, the good Lord himself.
