It binds them together. The more they bind together, the stronger they feel. The stronger they feel, the more they protest. The more they protest, the sillier they look. The sillier they look, the more people turn away from them.

I will miss him, and he will be forever in the Universe with the souls and sparks of all other great thinkers and those who saw and felt too much and too deeply and who needed to dull things out from time to time, because otherwise it would be the kleenex box forever.

Privileged to have "known" you Mr. Carlin. Catch a shooting star!

I think he would like this quote, and probably knew it:

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.” ~ Steven Weinberg, Nobel Laureate in physics.

Even now, hope you're sitting down, they are paying close to $10 a gallon. Google it. I believe the plan right now is to pull us up to that same price. We have been coddled because we have been so much longer dependent on cars than Europe. Then, the Europeans, way ahead of us, are starting to invest in alternative fuel sources for cars, and for example, hybrids are much more available there, as well as the socalled smart cars.

Meanwhile, it is also becoming a matter of increased demand, vs. supply, so those who supply, can increase the prices. The main drain on supplies is going to be India and China. Imagine, both these countries have over a billion people and in India they expect that by 2020 500 MILLIION will become "middle class", will start to live better, in high rises, increasing demands for more high energy appliances, as well as cars. Right now, the average income for middle classers in India runs around $20,000 per year, but the cost of living is much lower. This is expected to increase.

Same in China, a little slower, but there too the middle class will increase in the next decades with increasing demands for energy.

Think about it: 500 million new middle class people, which is almost twice as much as the total inhabitants of the USA.

We shall have to compete with them, for the first time, for the resources of the world. Not just gas, but food too. India and China feel it is "their turn", and who can blame them. Our lack of interest in developing alternative energy resources, plus our blatant lack of knowledge of the rest of the world population is not going to help us in this new century.

Meanwhile, to answer your direct question: capitalists and speculators are also driving the price of oil up. And you can answer yourself whether the bushers are capitalists and MORE corrupt and in bed with big oil and big business, than the democrats. There is very little difference, but there is one.

PS, sending the National Guard to China, to spread democracy is not going to cut it this time...

I am against guns but have no idea what to do in Finland. I know one thing: in Canada the per capita gun ownership is higher than in the US and there are far far less killings. From that little statistical snippet I would conclude that, indeed, it is people who kill people and the US people are apparently the killingest. So perhaps we should start looking at the population and not the weapons. We might learn something. For example that there is a greater rate of insanity in the US population, brought on by all the violence, with guns. (more)

Of the three I have to say Obama is the one who will be more successful in ending the war. Clinton will be too much like bush, with whom she has agreed a lot the past few years. McCain is out of touch and something out of Dr. Strangelove. No brainer. Besides, Obama, has the gift of being diplomatic. The other two don't. One is shrill and starts to cry when things don't go her way, and the other sings silly songs about bombing Iran.
