About Me

I enjoy SH for an opportunity to interact with a wide variety of people from all over the world. I think we are only beginning to get the barest outlines of how such expanded connectivity will affect us all - I hope we manage the challenges we are facing well.

Jesus, Da Vinci, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Shakespeare, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, FDR, William Wallace, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Edgar Cayce, - practically anyone and everyone with sparks flying from their brains.

Reading, writing, gardening, travel, family events. Have homesteaded, reported, lawyered, lived and loved (still doing that).

Human nature, nature, other animals, art, health, current events, history, society, religion,
food, reading of all kinds. Almost everything, really. Except professional sports, although I love watching anyone I know play anything.

Taking part in a live performance as an audience member is great fun!

TV watching as been erratic. None at all for most of the '70's (homesteading in remote location) and then between work and kids very little for many years after that. Got on Netflix and caught up on a few things a year or so ago. Enjoyed Rome, Duchess of Duke St., Monk, SNL, Jon Stewart show, good stand-up comics - I'm really rather culturally deprived or ignorant, take your pick. A lot of CSPAN. I like original source material. (My dad taught history.)

I enjoy Coen bros. movies. I like historical reenactments (Elizabeth, Lawrence of Arabia, Duchess of Duke St., Braveheart, etc.) and comedies (loved Roxanne, All of Me, most of his movies, appreciate the natural comedic abilities of Merle Streep, Al Brookes (loved Defending your Life) Robin Williams (loved What Dreams May Come) loved Calendar Girls, The Full Monty, Sexy Boots, Brassed Off, etc. etc. etc. Loved Mama Mia! LIghthearted chick flick we could sing-a-long.

As a kid, Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs, science fiction of all kinds. Then Dostoevsky, Solzhenitzen in his early days (First Circle, Gulag, etc.) Read compulsively for years, sometimes a couple of books a day. For candy, Agatha Christie, Sue Grafton, mysteries in general. Still good SciFi. Magazines, newspapers, online stuff. Ursula Le Guin, biographies, The Sixth Extinction, Last Days of Ancient Sunlight, Diana Galbadron (talk about candy!) I love and have read all of Riane Eisler, and I really like Naomi Klein. Brilliant women.

So many, each for its particular time. I'm full of Ben Franklin's pithy observations, sometimes to the consternation of my kids but now I notice they're doing the same thing. What can you do, if something's right on, it's right on. There are certain recurring truths. I like Proverbs in the Bible too.

Everyday heroes everywhere. Moms and dads who put their kids first. People who just keep on keeping on even when it doesn't make sense. Doctors and nurses who are truly conduits of healing energy (I've seen them.) Teachers who wake up in the morning inspired by subconscious problem solving to get through to that difficult student in this particular way...

  • the author of the post you just responded to me in has me blocked.. so i cant reply to your post there.. but in reply to your post .. well.. when it seems like politicians take from the poor and give to the rich, they act like they are trying to help the poor but their actions say different.. they send out letters to the sick that they'll cover a pill to kill oneself but wont cover a pill to aid someone to live, and then claim they will not create "death panels" with their newer revised system of care? .. are you surprised people do not like their "political agenda's" and do not trust one word that comes from their mouths??

  • I thank you hit the nail on the head...I agree with what you said but I was blocked so I couldn't respond to anyone. I guess he just couldn't stand me telling the truth. He even sent dirty pictures to me on my profile. What a lowlife.

Boy, Mr. We-Create-Our-Own-Reality-Rove should talk. He's just trying to deflect attention from the shameful machinations of Dick Cheney.

  • I just wanted to say I love your cute cats!

Your black and white one looks a LOT like my cat "Mittens" that died back in 2004. Makes me miss her seeing yours. She was a good momma cat. She even took care of other cats kittens. Imagine that!

Jane Goodall was horrified to discover that when groups of male chimps challenged the leaders of other groups and won, they then proceeded to murder the offspring of the vanquished foes, even to assault the pregnant females, inducing miscarriage, and then sired their own progeny.

At their worst, humans are no different.

In the old testament, "God" tells the Israelites to invade certain Canaanite towns, murder all the males (even to the infants) and take the females as their own. Surely, a God fashioned in man's image.

Human beings require years of socialization to learn to use the higher capacities of our brains (the forebrain, which controls anticipating consequences, and learning to defer gratification.) To create cultures that foster those years of socialization, it is necessary to have the empowerment of women. There is a direct relationship between the role of women and a society, and the degree to which that society is warlike.

It is heartbreaking to see the death of such a beautiful child. But every human being is someone's beautiful child, grown up. Kelsey's Daddy is every bit as precious, unique and valuable as she is, and as every person is. How does humanity sit by while we send our son's and daughter's off to war? The degree of civilization, of socialization, of education, of nurture, required to produce human beings who comprehend the tragedy of the individual loss of Kelsey, AND the societal loss of all our wars, is attained by both males and females. It is a matter of respecting life, and being committed to life-enhancing activities. During those efforts, we do need to protect ourselves from those who operate out of fear and hate, and are servants to death and destruction. But we need a bright line, and clear goal, as to what the ultimate purpose of humanity is - to love one another, and to care for and protect the earth, and all it contains.

Google Tim Flannery Amy Goodwin and read about the sewering of London - basically an analogy between our situation today with respect to climate change, and the city of London in the 1800's, when a lack of sewers meant the city water was killing all classes of people indiscriminantly. Parliament argued for 40 years about how to pay for a sewer system before realizing that only the wealthy could fund it, by taxing themselves. In the present situation, the people of the first world nations are the wealthy - all of us. Our lifestyle is producing most of the carbon; if we don't change, nothing will (except the planet.) I would have opened with the concluding paragraph - we are in a period of challenge that is very analogous to a war - we must make some significant changes in the way we operate on this planet, or it won't matter much WHAT we do. I can't believe every American isn't aware of the interference of health insurance companies with treatments. There have been hundreds, if not thousands of stories in the media in the past 20 years. I am personally aware of a number of egregious situations, including two bankruptcies, a death, and an intentional act of gross negligence due to the fact of the person not having insurance - and I am just one person! How many other stories there must be out there. Many people who DO have insurance are afraid to go for treatment, because they don't know what will be treated, what will be denied, and they fear that illness might impact their continued coverage or their employment. They fear that a lay-off will cost them their insurance - and the price of COBRA is ridiculous. Who can afford it? It's really bad out there. (more)

I lived for 20 years in a country with socialized medicine and had my 3 children there, while my siblings and cousins were experiencing the same life events here in the USA. We constantly compared our experiences, and mine were by far the most positive, with everyone in amazed jealousy over the support, maternal leave, and NO out-of-pocket medical costs - as if furnishing a nursery, all the infant accessories, child-proofing and constantly changing clothes for mommy and child both aren't enough expense. (also generally lost income as careers are "mommy tracked.") Subsequent experience back here for the last 18 yrs have only confirmed my disgust with our "winner-take-all devil-take-the-hindmost" approach to our fellow human beings currently being sold to us - and make no mistake, there is a huge, hugely financed campaign to convince us that we don't need what every other first world nation has - socialized medicine. Hey all you "socialism" haters out there - let's just privatize it all - sell off all the roads, highways, town water/sewer systems, parks, schools - only those who pay can use them - the rest of us can do without. We have let our jobs be shipped overseas, so we no longer have a labor movement - heck, we're already competing to work as debt-endentured servants for the bankers and corporatists (who are for the most part the same people)! If we truly wanted to take our country back, we'd completely reform our economic system and get it working for EVERYONE. (more)
