It's amazing to think of the possibilities of what would happen if the Limbaughs, Roves, Schmidts, Coulters, Hannitys, O'Reillys, Palins, etc were running the Obama campaign. McCain/Palin would have like a 5 % support with all the dirt we could sling at them. Yet, Obama keeps things dignified and keeps the margins nervously close by focusing on actual issues of importance. But then again, it would be a hollow victory to win by using McCain/Palin tactics. I hope moderates can see through this haze of crap that's exploding before our eyes. Great blog post. (more)

I am disgusted that in the 21st century we still take a mideval stance against nature. As our population explodes and puts exponential strains on the environment EVERYWHERE, animal populations are already suffering and mass extinctions are accelerating. Wolves are sacred to humans on so many levels, including the indigineous people of North America. Yes, they can be a hazard to human interests, but in the 21st century, we can co-exist with them. We need to preserve large tracts of wilderness. We need to fundamentally change our views toward the value of Earth's limited ecosystems as we can learn how to better solve complex problems today by observing the efficient and complex functioning of balanced ecosystems More importantly, nature should be valued because of its purely intrinsic value and simple beauty that is seldom found in many populated portions of the planet. Wolves are not a major threat to humans, even to those that live near nature and take proper precautions. We are selfish to kill wolves if we are merely concerned about bountiful hunting trips. But I guess to most of us, paying $1000 to a company is much better than paying an addition $5 in taxes to the government, whether we're talking road maintenance, health coverage, education, regulating mortgage practices, ad infinitum.

If what Wright has said there is hate for America or racist, I'm not sure I know what hate for America and racism are. It's very sad that this took such a toll on Obama and may continue to tax him after he secures the nomination.

It's sad that we can never even address what causes the motivation of terrorism in America. It's taboo to talk about it. You can only treat the symptoms. We cannot address the cause. If you address the cause, then people will say you hate America, which makes absolutely no sense to me. Wouldn't love for America involve trying to really figure out how to stop terrorism rather than banishing people from society who dare address the root causes?

Here are the observations for Antarctica

It's hard to say what caused the rather remarkable recovery of Arctic ice since record lows last summer - but it's undoubtedly related to the colder winter earth has experienced, may be due to increased clouds over the Arctic. Still a mystery to me, but I bet you the ice is pretty thin and much of it will melt this summer back down to very low values given how small the ice coverage recently was.

As for the Antarctica, this could be due to increased precipitation, which might indicate a change in the storm tracks or instabilities related to temperature gradients from equator to pole.

These changes do not disprove global warming, but they are interesting from a scientific standpoint. You also see the long term trend in the Arctic. Many publications coming out on both poles at the moment, and I haven't kept up with them, but plan to in my free time over the next couple of months.

The best we can do is illustrate the policy positions of Barack Obama very clearly, not just saying they are similar to Hillary Clinton's. They are very similar on many of the issues, but for some reason it's not clicking with a lot of Hillary Clinton supporters. For the life of me, it makes no sense of me that electing a president is more about liking someone as a person rather than electing someone who's policy positions identify best with our own. I happen to like Obama on a personal level, but that's not the reason I voted for him in the primary. It has everything to do with his policy positions:

Now I don't really like Hillary Clinton on a personal level, but will vote for her because of her policy positions should she win the nomination through defecting superdelegates. I don't understand the popularity contest of presidential elections since the position is of such huge importance to our well-being in the US and for the good of our nation.

Staying positive, informative and unconfrontational? is probably the best way to approach such people.

As Einstein once said: "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence and fulfills the duty to express the results of his thoughts in clear form" (more)

Back in college, we had a spam party/potluck, where all kinds of spam (or immitation spam like TreatTM) were served. I made something like Spam sandwiches which were terrible. The best part of the meal was the cherry-infused corn syrup drink that someone brought, which was used as a chaser. (more)
