Semper Fi posted December 18, 2009 15:09:51I have run into several Viet Nam combat impostors in my time. Once you start asking the right questions, they usually expose themselves.
After getting my certification, my sniper combat experiences were "0" in the bush. In fact, I would not take a sniper rifle on patrol. Our six man team could not afford the loss of firepower, particularly in close quarters.
Once we began to stand down and halted reconnaissance patrols, they dispatched our company to act as security on our area radio relay stations. These were on hilltops (mine was Hill 819 - 819 representing the height in feet). This is where I brought my sniper rifle, as we were fixed, dug in well, had four teams, plenty of firepower, and held the high ground.
Shot two rock apes after they tripped flares outside the perimeter wires one night. That's it!
I have lots of friends who have migrated down to Arizona! I used to go down for the Seattle Mariners pre-season games and to golf (Tempe). Great place! I sponsor and crew on a ULHRA 5.0 litre hydro (three-time national champions), and we raced in Phoenix this year (Firebird Stadium).
Semper Fi and Merry Christmas Nancy! -
Semper Fi posted December 16, 2009 14:23:39HA! Prairie Dogs, ground squirrels, and acres upon acres of flat alphalpha pivots....a varminteers life for me!
It appears you taught our troops well. Good job! They deserve the best they can get. Different than it was back in the late 60's for sure.
In October of '69, I was selected to represent my Reconnaissance BN in a fairly new Scout Sniper School that was started in Da Nang. They flew me in from Quang Tri for a couple weeks of what seemed like a holiday vacation.
Cold beer, real cheese burgers, crisp chips, .....classes in the mornings and shooting all afternoon. That's it! Today it is one of the most intensive training elements in the armed forces..I do miss it, and still owe a debt of thanks to the Corps for making me grow up. It will forever be the greatest adventure and experience of my life.
May Santa shower you with everything on your list this year!
