As a dual-citizen who has traveled outside of the USA and Canada, I can tell you, the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency has changed how other countries feel about engaging with the United States. That change in diplomacy has already created an environment of co-operation between countries that were wary of working with the duplicitous Bush Presidency.
As you read, or if you read, and have reading comprehension skills, you will take not that he accepted the award not for himself but, "That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century."
That graciousness, to acknowledge he doesn't believe he should receive it, but accepts it on behalf of all of us working toward a peaceful and co-operative world, is one of his qualities that makes the world stand up and take notice and reduces the hostility the USA has built over the last decade. ROBERTO CLEMENTE
He was the first Latin American in MLBA and he was the Spanish Version of Jackie Robinson. Hit Wikipedia and you will see he was a humanitarian, gave huge amounts of time to charity and they have designed Four Rivers Stadium to reflect something to do with his Uniform Number.
He also has so many awards and also has a MLBA AWARD named after him.
ROBERTO CLEMENTE
Oh, yeah, he also volunteered for the Marine Reserves and served for 4 years during the early '60s.
The Pittsburgh Pirates wish they had a Right Fielder with half his talent.
I just wish we still had him as a humanitarian and to educate and influence others to higher purposes.

Why do Republicans always want to cut taxes and the ... Why do Republicans always want to cut taxes and the Democrats are always saying they are for the poor ... but want to increase taxes? (more)

Democrats don't want to raise taxes, just FAIRLY tax the multi-millionaires that pay less than 15% of their annual earnings (from all sources, trust funds, hedge funds, shares, etc.). As of NOW, they pay less percentage of tax than the lowest tax bracket of "regular people." This was brought about by the Bush Tax cut.
The Republican/Bush Tax Cut is believed to be able to allow the richest Americans to take the savings, received from not paying taxes at a rate of even the lowest tax bracket, and then invest it in the economy creating jobs, and other means of generating wealth and mechanisms that will generate far more Tax dollars than the 15% they pay. The problem? Most, like every body else, don't.
The Democratic Party isn't for raising taxes. They are for putting the money the government receives in current tax revenue to appropriate purposes. There are, often times, 4-6 levels of management in some government bureaus when one or two would be more appropriate and work more efficiently (no more paperwork stuck somewhere forever, so the theory goes).
Also, instead of spending on things like the Starr Report (Ken Starr was the Independent Council appointed by the Republican Senate to investigate Bill Clinton's and Monica Lewinsky's romp) which cost $45 MILLION dollars for the investigation and the cost for printing up the report for congressional members and press is unknown.
There are several areas of shifting money from one outdated or "party loyalty finessed committee" than to raise taxes.
HOWEVER, sooner or later, America has to realize that certain things have a limited safety-life. The interstate highway and bridges throughout the nation need to have EXTENSIVE repair work; this is neither a Democratic or Republican issue, it is about the safety and future economy of the country. The same for our docks and streets in large urban centers. The streets need to be exhumed to the foundation (2-5 yards), have a new and stable foundation replaced and the new road bed built and then the road.
The infrastructure is failing and this failure is a security hazard in terms of health (feedlot bacteria entering the water supply or chemicals by accident or purpose).
The Democratic party will discuss the necessity of these projects and how Homeland Security funds ARE part of keeping the country safe and try to shift tax dollars from "pork projects" like Ted Stevens' (R-Alaska) "Road to Nowhere" in Alaska and the interstate interchange in Florida that is another of his projects that THE PEOPLE DO NOT WANT.
Little pork barrel projects add up to big funding money. Time to get the Republicans and the Democrats out of the pork business. (more)
