About Me: Andy was born in Detroit to a union family. His parents were Democrats who only voted Republican once, the first time Eisenhower ran. Andy became involved in politics early in 1964 after his parents took him to a rally and saw LBJ. A fan of the New Frontier, Andy started off as a Democrat!
The Vietnam War years began his odyssey into political theory. Eager to see the war resolved honorably, Andy flirted with Nixon. After the Watergate scandal, Andy then had a cup of coffee with the Libertarians. This led to exploring economics by way of Milton Friedman.
The 1980s was the Era of Reagan. While supporting Reagan's policies, Andy was still voting Libertarian. He figured Reagan would win without his vote, so he may as well give it to somebody who needed it. The Era of Tax Revolts had also begun with Prop 6 in California, and it spread throughout the land. During the late '80s, Andy had begun listening to talk radio. Rush Limbaugh was starting out, but a local talk host, Mark Scott, was making a big impression on Andy.
Through Mark Scott, Andy became acquainted with the works of Ayn Rand. Scott also used his radio program to educate his audience on the Austrian school of economics. Andy was introduced to Ludwig von Mises, Frederick A Hayek, and many others.
Andy continued voting Libertarian in the 1988 election. He knew Bush would win, but voted out of conviction. That changed in 1992. For the first time, he voted Republican as that election seem to be going Clinton's way. Andy even participated in Michigan's Democrat primary, voting for Jerry Brown, hoping to help derail Clinton. The Clinton Era showed Andy just how important Rand's philosophy of Objectivism was. As well as Mark Scott's motto of "I love my country, but fear my government." Hearing that there was some interesting programs on shortwave radio, Andy got himself one and was soon listening to the likes of Tom Valentine, Brother Stair, and Kurt Saxon.
Saxon introduced Andy to a new term, "peasant anarchy". It was a hybrid of Libertarian politics and advocated a peaceful resistance to state tyranny. The idea was to do as the character John Galt did in Rand's tome of a novel, "Atlas Shrugged". Drop out! To take a minimalist approach and learn to live on very little money, thus paying fewer taxes. Starve the beast of it's mother's milk, tax revenue.
Andy launched a newsletter/zine in 1994 called, "SERF'S UP! Common Sense for the Common Peasant". It served as a vehicle to self publish "Beyond Barter: A Guide to Alternative Currency and Banking Systems". He also interviewed a wide range of folks, including Kurt Saxon. Andy also wrote articles under the pen name of Joseph A. Serf, once also used by the actor Patrick McGoohan when he directed an episode of his fantastic TV series, "The Prisoner". One such article later became a separate pamphlet due to it's popularity, "High Density Fruit Orchards". The newsletter was once reviewed by R. Seth Friedman who published "Fact Sheet Five". Friedman wrote, "When it comes to politics, Andy's pen is sharp and filled with poisoned ink."
By the late 1990s, Andy focused more on his career in sales than on writing. What writing he did do was now on the Internet. Andy's on-line novella, "When Autumn Leaves Fall", may be dated, but is still relevant today. In 2002, Andy turned his emails to friends about the Reality TV show, "Survivor", into a website, www.survivorreview. Andy still recaps episodes, with his own twist, today.
For the 2008 election cycle, Andy began a blog at Townhall.com. He also blogs at Yahoo, and has been posting some at his page at Facebook.com. With the way the economy is now, and the state politics in America, Andy is now joining Sodahead.com to spread his message.
