I think the Berlin wall did neither prolong nor help with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The wall was very successful in separating Berlin (obviously) into two very distinct cities/country. To the extent (before the wall) west berlin was able to absorb east berlin and contribute much of its intellectual and commerical power, I think Germany would definitely of been more democratic and closer to the west. The soviet union fell for many reasons with the wall having nothing to do with it. The wall was a sign of the times and a symbol of the seperation, and for the most part, likely worked to separate berlin (which was the intention of the USSR). (more)

Look at Mantle (clearly the baseball idol during his time and after his time), Tony Gwen (not the greatest ever but his life time batting avg of over 300 plus numerous gold gloves is hard to beat), Ted Williams (the first and I think last person to have over 400 batting avgr), Ripkin Jr. who definitely wasn't the best but his stamina and sportsmanship were unparelled, Nolan Ryan or Clemens who were probably the best pictchers to ever pitch, and then there are players like A Rod and Jeter who are great playes and win championships.
