"Excuse me sir (at which point I swerved around, surprised by the strength of his voice) can I borrow you for a dollar?"
I wanted badly to give him that dollar, but I instead did NOT give him that dollar. As callous as it sounds, it was once argued to me by a certain politically charged magazine that Hobos are genetically inferior and we ought not to feel sympathy for them.
Since that is cruel and close to suggesting that hobos ought to be left to die, its not a position I endorse. I think hobos are often people who have fallen on hard times, and were neglected because of a lack of social safety nets that help people rise out of bad circumstances.
I give them money sometimes, but never more than a dollar. Out of principle and because of how I was raised, I was taught that you shouldn't encourage them to depend on hand-outs...cant decide how much justification that belief has. (more)
