  • See, we have come full circle to a fairly complete agreement.

    1. I, too, just learned that deleting has that effect

    2. I lived in Louisiana long enough to understand that the South sees the War for Southern Independence (love the names they use for it) differently than we up here do

    3. Rep Wilson did indeed leave plenty of valid reasons to deplore his outburst

  • I think I may have accidentally deleted your response as I cannot see it either. Sorry.

I am sure there are righties who are saying that ALL lefties are screaming racist -- they are the opposite and EQUALLY WRONG view to the lefties who throw out the racist slur indiscriminately. It is all ridiculous. Clearly neither you nor I belong to either group so I guess arguing about this at this point, seems like splitting hairs. I really don't want to be in the position of defending the Sons of the Confederacy any further than I have as I am no expert on the subject. That said, I will simply point out that even if a segment of that group is as you describe, that hardly constitutes any indication that a member of the group is racist. I do not believe the flying of the Confederate flag (something I would not do -- but then I am a Yankee) necessarily indicates racism, but I will leave that fight for the southerners as it is their heritage (or so they claim.) But the real crux of the thing is that charges of racism have been thrown at Wilson BECAUSE of his outburst during the president's speech as a form of retribution for that outburst which had NOTHING to do with race but rather was a POLITICAL difference.

  • I am afraid you have completely misunderstood me. I am not a right winger at all. I am an independent very moderate kind of gal. I don't care much for absolutes at all.
I do not believe that "probably" and "possibly" are at all the same, and I think had you used the word "possibly", I would have had nothing to say. "Probably" means more likely than not and should not be used unless you have some evidence. (The Sons of the Confederacy -- the affiliation that seems to give most reason to believe Wilson a racist -- is not a racist/hate group despite its name, and you can alleviate that concern if you check it out.)
Your description of the left's attitude toward the racist charges is fairly moderate and thought out. I do not necessarily think you can apply that same degree of reason to much of the left where charges of racism have been far more ridiculous in recent months. I have to add that I do not believe you CAN or SHOULD speak for ALL left wingers ("...while in actual fact all Left-wingers, like me...")

  • That you do not agree with whoever it was - is fine. Everyone has opinions and they are just that - opinions. Yet you managed to call me out on my own page - without discourse.

I don't take kindly to that.

I'd never presume to come here with complaints about another and to call you 'wrong'.

  • There are some slurs that are so egregious that even the taint sticks with a person. Racism is one of those things. People throw it out in the public arena with little or no proof and even though it was only speculation, it follows the victim. I was simply trying to point out that in the absence of any proof, it would be best NOT to speculate publicly. I am afraid calling someone PROBABLY racist is no better than simply calling them a racist. It all works the same.
You do have me at a bit of a loss as there was so much activity on this subject on a number of threads that i have been unable to get back to our exchange. Without seeing my comment in context, I cannot fully answer the part about "...racist slur."; however, as a rule I try to tread VERY lightly about impugning someone else's motives (exactly WHY I think your remark about Wilson probably being a racist was unfortunate at best) so if I did, I am sorry--just can't be sure unless I saw my entire remark.
For the record, I do not approve of blocking anyone for a simple disagreement and am glad you chose to respond in the only way you could.

  • Ah. Makes sense (to take it down). I just could not believe it made sensed to pair a cute kitty picture making all the ladies (especially moms) say, "Awww, it's CUTE!" with a statement condoning the shooting of a kid.

    So thanks.

  • You, too! Going great so far for me and the wife! Out-of-town daughter has come through town on way to wedding back in her college town (Athens, GA--DANG YOU, ya nasty Gators!) where all 3 of us will attend the wedding of the daughter's near-lifelong friend begun when both were Brownies under my wife's leadership. Wife is VERY excited for her "first Brownie wedding"! So, it's an unusually good weekend, thanks.

Sorry, I'm a bit too old to view Wings nostalgically, I know that folks of your (later) generation can discover in amazement, "Hey, did you know that Paul McCartney used to be in a group called The Beatles"? Sorry, Wings is a lame shadow of the Beatles, and McCartney in the Wings is a lame shadow of what he and Lennon could do together in the Beatles. Specifically, McCartney alone is hopelessly sappy, while somehow with Lennon it balances out (odd, as Lennon alone could also be quite sappy). (more)

It is interesting to me that solar development may show us that there are, indeed, some technologies that only become viable after decades of slow improvement that fools the "sober assessment" of the acknowledged experts in the field. Solar cells go back to the 50s and beyond, but have always been to expensive and too inefficient, and power-company types have been saying, "it'll never amount to much".
