Yes the curriculum is important...I enjoyed most of what i learnt during Philosophy (though the subject I studied was actually called "Religious Studies" and the curriculum involved the study of th "Philosophy of religion" and the "Philosophy of ethics"...so really it was Philosophy).
Yeah it can be a good thing to say to people who never think of themselves...it's good to wake people up every now and then.

They're great subjects...philosophy especially...though it annoys me sometimes as it often uses many redundant words in order to say something relatively simple.

I don't have a signature word...though the phrase "What do YOU want?" is one of my most used.

Yeah I hate exams too...but at the same time I don't really want to be assessed based on my performance in class...as I've never done very well in class.
I often don't do homework and don't often contribute...

I think languages are a good example of how the education system does not reward thought.
Instead of teaching people how to use a language and to use their brains...we are simply told to learn a load of words and phrases...parrot style.
I got an A in French and a B in Spanish...and I can barely speak either.
Education is all about passing exams now...
This is what I meant when I said philosophy forces us to think.
Because to actually PASS the course you MUST use your brain...it is not simply learning and repeating...it is learning and then using that knowledge to form personal arguments.
That's what I meant by being forced to think.
In general terms philosophy and English Literature do not force us to think...they are a bridge like you said.
But in order to pass these courses at the level I took them...being able to think was a necessity.
The fact that I am a thinker meant I could pass these courses with very little revision.
While everyone else was busting their asses learning everything again and again...I just used my ability to think and argue a point to pass the exams.
This pisses a lot of people off...as they think I'm lazy.
And I am to a degree...but the only reason I can get away with doing so little work is because of the way I have trained my brain to work.
And most people don't bother with that.

I'm not sure it's sport that does it...I just think it's an overall emphasis of not thinking things through.
The education system doesn't really get people to think...
That's why I chose subjects like Philosophy and English Literature...because they force you to think about things.
It's not just reciting what you learned from a book or in class.
