Women should have a choice. It's not cruel as it is made out to be. What's cruel is to give a child an unwanted life. (more)

People are taught being gay is the ultimate form of being sick and pathetic, that it's the worst thing ever, at school. And the names hurt- they really do hurt. Most targets aren't gay- some are able to brush it off, but others feel awkward about talking to parents and hurt. Bullying in general is terrible- it's even worse if the school does nothing about it. I wish schools weren't so homophobic and unfriendly. It doesn't matter what you are, or who you are- it affects you. The bullying spreads homophobia, since guys who are teased began to loathe what they know they aren't, what they don't want to identify with. It's just sickening. (more)

Stephen King was right to praise Rowling- her plots are most of the time actually great, her characters are realistic unlike Meyer's cardboard cutouts of people (especially the human characters), and Rowling skilfully combines mythology. Meyer just basically screwed around with the vampire myth. I love doing something new, and I don't need full-on traditional, but Meyer completely failed to be creative with her vampires. She turned them into golem-esque icicles who excel at everything and sparkle. If you think that's a good idea for the vampire myth, it's executed horribly. And all Bella can do is stare at Edward's beauty (which is described in flowery prose), while he totes her around. She is nothing without Edward- she pretty much gives up on life, on dreams and excelling at anything when he leaves her. Such true love! But what is this sending to people? That a dependent and emotionally abusive relationship is a good one, true love? Twilight is an intriguing book that grips the reader and sucks them in, but as for the quality of the actual writing, it's not exactly good. It's not a deep series, just something that appeals to teenagers because they can identify with the protagonist and wish they had an Edward of their own. (more)
