Straight male African-American Muslim. Scramble those in any order that suits you. I am educated, intelligent and rational and I value those traits in others as well. I have been involved in Dawah (invitation to Islam, propagation of the faith) and was the imam of a dawah group working in a county jail. I am no longer active in Dawah because of my revulsion at the violence being perpetrated by some Muslims in the name of Islam. I have changed my identification from American Muslim to Liberal Muslim.

Personally, I don't think direct money payments would be the best thing. Instead, I would like to see a big enlargement of Headstart. "Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families." Those children who need it should get a full year of Headstart and start first grade only after completing it. (more) -

As a Muslim, why am I not celebrating the growing numbers of Muslims and influence of Islam? Well, in some ways, I am. But I am really frightened that more countries will repeat the history of Algeria, which had a large educated, westernized class at independence, which formed an enlightened government with freedom of thought and expression. This was overthrown by fundamentalists who killed many of the educated and drove many more into exile. The few who remained had to mouth the fundamentalist line or become virtual hermits. Look at the history of Japan in the 1930s, when the liberals and pacifists were assassinated by the hawks. See the results.
Now, what is terribly, terribly wrong with that video is the idea that the answer is Christian evangelism. It does not work. Muslims are almost completely immune to Christian conversion. They already believe in the same God, they already believe in Jesus as a great prophet. Even the virgin birth of Jesus is in the Qur'an. There simply is nothing new offered by Christianity. There are three possible answers to traditional or fundamentalist Islam, which can be accepted by Muslims.
The one I prefer is Liberal Islam, to work from within Islam to promote a more enlightened, humanitarian, scientific view of the world. Support MPV, support Amina Wadud http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... and the women as imams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... movement, etc.
The second is the Baha'i Faith http://www.bahai.us/ which is a new religion based on Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and western enlightenment thinking. It is popular with people in interfaith marriages, Muslim-Hindu couples converting to Baha'i have made it the fastest growing religion in India. The problem with the Baha'i Faith is traditional Muslims see it not as an independent religion to be respected and tolerated but as a Muslim heresy to be destroyed. In countries with Muslim law, Baha'is are killed and Baha'i holy places demolished.
The third possible answer is apostasy. All Americans should be aware of Wafa Sultan and her courageous stand against Islamic terrorism as a Muslim woman (or ex-Muslim?). http://www.spike.com/video/wa... Apostasy has the major problem of being totally unacceptable to practicing Muslims, meaning that the apostate must be willing to sever all ties with his family and friends. If he is living in a Muslim country, he will need to emigrate or go into seclusion, otherwise he will be killed. So few Muslims, even if they lose their faith and become unbelievers, are willing to become apostates publicly.

(Even a small reduction in the incidence of HIV-AIDS would save an awful lot of public health / tax dollars.) But the same applies equally to straight people, heterosexual marriage also needs to be exclusive and faithful.
