  • I too had a run in with Stingtheory's craziness. Hey if you run into him again let me know. We can double team that nutcase. He's still spouting some stuff about the tribes of Israel. Normally, I let the nutcases just be but he is one of the more virlent ones.

Whether conservatives are ready to admit it or not quite, gay and lesbian marriage is a legal issue, not a religious one. Civil rights, liberties and freedoms are the real issue.

If people who are religious feel threatened by gay marriage, that is their problem; gay marriage does absolutely nothing to threaten religious freedom or the practice of any religion.

Conservatives right now seem very prone to believe that the sky actually is falling, so I'm guessing Monckton's speech video and transcript will be picked up by the right wing repeat-and-amplify network, which I and most other progressives and liberals probably don't place much faith in, no matter how loud the noise.

Thanks for the link, which debunks Monckton's hysteria and plugs PoliFact.com. A little preventive conservative hysteria debunking can't hurt.

He would be a joke if it were not for the fact that he actually has enough power as governor of my native state to be a petty tyrant at times.

The unfortunate thing about Texas is that it is a large state with an overwhelming number of conservative (socially backward) people who say "ain't it awful" and then usually vote for some contemptible person who makes things worse.

I hope Rick Perry gets all the infamy he deserves.

But I think that from a conservative's point of view, any organization that at any time supports or has supported anything that is outside of their list of approved conservative activities, beliefs or ideological agenda and worldview is "liberal."

Conservatives tend to be exclusive rather than inclusive, which is one of their weaknesses, and to _not_ be "liberal," something must be 100% officially-approved conservative. Even the slightest deviation casts suspicion and doubt, and any greater deviation earns the despised label "liberal."

We need to legalize marijuana now and stop arresting good citizens, throwing them into prison, taking their children away to foster care for nothing more than using marijuana like many of the rest of us use beer, wine or other alcohol, and making violent criminals and drug cartels even richer and more violent, like alcohol prohibition did in the 1900s.

The "War on Drugs" is incredibly expensive and does more harm than good; it needs to end.

If Obama wants it, conservatives don't want it. If Obama is for it, conservatives are against it. If Obama had spoken, as Kristol suggests Obama should have, to support Brazil in its bid for the Olympics, then conservatives would blast Obama for not supporting America. But since Obama bid for having the Olympics in the U.S., conservatives hate the idea and are overjoyed that it's not going to happen.

One gets the feeling that if Obama spoke up for Christian conservatism, conservatives would find some way to hate him even for that.

Fox News, a reassuring illusion of reason and legitimacy in a complex world of fear and doubt, promoting a mindset and worldview that is as crystal clear and easy to grasp as it is wrong. (more)

I'll state it flat out: Christianity, if taken seriously, can give one serious psychological problems that can lead to practical problems and a difficult and challenging life in which the only healthy course is to navigate one's way out of the confusing, conflicting maze of Christian dogma.

I've been there; I hope Christianity dies. I'm personally not merely non-religious, I'm actively anti-religion because of my upbringing by and among zealous Christian missionaries that I now deeply resent.

    Good article.

The current health-care bill is a bastard chimera that everyone thinks is ugly and no one wants.

The Democrats are not going to get Republicans' support no matter how much Democrat's bend over and say "give it to me," so Democrats should go it alone as best they can on this one, I think.

  • +3 raves I think that Glenn Beck's source of income and career rests on his ability to generate controvers... I think that Glenn Beck's source of income and career rests on his ability to generate controversy and pander to those who are willing to open their minds and soak up whatever he dishes out, like Rush Limbaugh.

Conservatives love Glenn Beck because--among other things--they think that liberals hate him, that he gets under liberals' skin, that liberals "can't stand the truth."

The truth is, Glenn Beck acts and talks like a melodramatic buffoon. His emotions and rhetoric are all over the map. Conservatives ought to send the WAAAAHmbulance for him instead of for liberals. He's a clown in a conservative circus, a barker at a conservative freak show. I don't see why anyone would pay much attention to him or give him much credit, much less progressives and liberals.

He's willing to make a fool of himself to a larger audience so long as his smaller target audience doesn't realize that fact, and in order to be famous and make lots of money, and feel like he's a big shot.
