I have a propensity to hate most modern games. The gameplay has become total garbage and more and more focus is put on the thrash and bash aspect rather than the story. After all, if you're going to guide your focus away from the gameplay at least make the story good. My favourite video game is Ocarina of Time. I also enjoy the shit out of the classic Castlevania and Megaman games (I fap to Megaman X's level design). My favourite modern video game is Fallout 3. Fallout 3 did everything right. The story was phenomenal, the immersion was perfect, the gameplay was awesome. None of that rpg bullshit Skyrim had (which got really fucking monotonous after a while). We need a Fallout 4.

You are an astute observer. I'm pretty sure Turgenev had some interest in Hegel as well, so I probably should have read his work long ago :)

Yeah I actually was born in Japan, and lived in Japan until I was 16. (I’m a half-ling) We learn about these writers and their famous books early as in elementary school, so don't worry I do know the details and background of those books..... ^_^; lol

Spinoza and Camus are also on my list of favorites :) In the history books, Hegel is set in contrast to Immanuel Kant, so it might help to familiarize yourself with Kant a little bit first. Kant's Critique of Pure Reason attempted to set up a dualistic reality very similar to Plato's forms. He goes on to use that dualism as a basis for an attempt to prove the existence of God. Hegel denounced Kant's critique, instead latching on to Spinoza's conception of an abstract, non-anthropomorphic god. He preferred to use observation to build a subjective, scientific philosophy, which he called phenomenology.
In a sense, both Nietzsche and Hegel were reacting to Kant, so I feel like they have a lot in common. They both end up declaring the primacy of the subjective over the dualist view of external absolutes and a passive perceiver. ("Primacy of the Subjective" is the title of a book one of my professors wrote, so I couldn't help using the phrase.) I've seen people that try to pit Nietzsche and Hegel against one another, too, though. I don't think they were really at odds.
Personally, I wouldn't call Nietzsche a nihilist. He called himself a positivist lol. I would place him at the beginnings of German phenomenology (Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger) and leave it at that.
Also what made me hesitate to reply you soon is a huge difference in our point of view. To answer your questions I was afraid that I might sound like I’m lecturing you or I’m trying to change your philosophical outlook. Obviously you are a atheist and a nihilist. I’m not a simple “optimist” like you assumed (If I was there is no way I can like “No Longer Human” lol), but I can tell that how I look at the world, and what I look in to literatures is quite different from yours. I just wanted to let you know before hand that I’m not interested to teach your or change you… :)
> I'm guessing you've read Dazai's "Run Melos, Run!" story, since you went to Japanese school. Story was surprisingly enthusiastic ^__^
Yeah, when I was 6th grade we even did a voice-only play for “Run Melos”. I agree, for Dazai it is surprisingly enthusiastic. I do love the unique theme of the book, “Making someone wait can be more painful then waiting for someone”.
> I asked for a few reasons. Not necessarily because you're a Christian, but because of how optimistic you sound.

I have to guess you thought of me as “optimist” from the quotations I put on Sodahead profile? I’m little bit surprised. You are the first person that told me I sound optimistic from those quotes. ^_^ I do believe that there must be an ultimate good and idea in this world, but I have been through very dark times in life… I can’t possibly like Dazai’s works, not even Dostoevsky’s, If I was a optimist. Both of there works, in my opinion, have a characters with doubts to faith due to suffering in this world, asking God a questions over and over again. Difference is Dostoevsky usually give an answer to readers with Christian character as an example of how to live, and Dazai doesn’t go any further with solution. Both are brilliant authors though. (Btw Dazai was a pretty big Dostoevsky fan.)
> Dazai, to me, was a pretty hardcore nihilist. At least in some of his stories. In what ways do you think Christianity influenced him?
Yeah Dazai does have nihilist traits, but I don’t know if I can agree with you about calling him “hardcore nihilist”. One reason is I never saw any literature-critics in Japan referring him as a “nihilist”, and also from observing his novels myself. As you know, “no longer human” being his semi-biography, the main character is pretty much himself. He mentions “God” repeatedly. He tells the readers “I was never able to believe in God of forgiveness, I always believed in God of punishment”. When his wife was raped because of her innocence and ability to trust people, he asks 3 times over the time, “God, I ask you. Is trustfulness a sin?”. In my opinion, a hardcore nihilist wouldn’t even have to answer that kind of question, especially not to “God”. True nihilist already knows everything is meaningless, and there is no god. Dazai seemed to have suffered a lot from trying to believe or understand Christian religion (Obviously when he mentions “God” he isn’t talking about Shinto God or other polytheistic Gods, but an omnipotent God from Abraham’s religion. Keywords like “sin” “punishment” “forgiveness” indicates that his talking about Christianity). The ending was nihilistic, yes, and I definitely can’t call him a “Christian”, but he did attempt, and suffered from idea of a Christian God, and that’s why I think he had “Influence from Christianity”
> And... you never told me what your favorite story by him was XD
Definitely “No longer Human”. Probably one of the darkest, deepest book that describes naked human nature I have read… Is it the same with you?
I don’t mean to keep bugging you about Dostoevsky when you already told me you didn’t like one of his books, but many people say “No longer human” is very similar to “Notes from underground” from Dostoevsky. I will assure you there is no religious/Christian stance in the book. If you love No longer human I’m pretty sure you will like Notes from underground too ^_^
>Though my English professor swears Dostoevsky was forced by the Russian government into making the ending Christian, as opposed to his original nihilistic ending. I can't really validate that, though, so the validity of that statement is dubious.
^^; Yeah, you are right. If you read any other books from him (except “Notes from underground”) you can tell he is a Christian, more specifically, a die hard Orthodox Christian. Actually the Soviet government tried to explain a lot of his works like your teacher did, since soviet government wanted to give props for Dostoevsky’s work but didn’t want the religious element of his books to influence the people. Although, just like Dazai, reading his books, you can tell he had gone through a lot of doubts. This is a quote from himself…“It is not like a child that I believe in Christ and profess my faith in Him. My hosanna has come forth from the crucible of doubt”
>From what I've found, everything Soseki ever wrote has been translated... except for one novel, titled "The Poppy." Have you read it? I've read everything else Soseki's ever written, including his essays, so I'm piiiiised that I can't read The Poppy D'X
Grrr I heard of it but I haven’t read “The Poppy” (虞美人草) yet…sorry xD
I should though! So far my favorite from Soseki is “Kokoro”, like many other people ^^
Wow, wall of text. lol
Sorry to make you read all this ^^;;
Not only Dazai but I also love Endo Shusaku, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, and as you mentioned Natsume Soseki too. I read everything in Japanese since it's my first language, and if you read it in Japanese as well, there’s a fantastic website that let you read popular Japanese literature that copyright has expired. All of Dazai is work is on here and almost all of the works from the writers I listed above.
http://www.aozora.gr.jp/
I guess you asked me why I like Dazai, because I wrote "Christian" under my religious veiw? In a big category I'm a Christian, but I'm not really a traditional Christian.... but if I try explain you about my belief it will take too long so maybe I shouldn't go into that. lol But then, it's not like Dazai's works are hardcore anti-Christian material, so even if I was a traditional Christian I don't see why I shouldn't like his books....
It's hard to say exactly what Dazai believed in, and I don't know if I can call him "Nihilistic Atheist". Maybe he has some quality of Nihilist, but I can’t say that’s eve...

It’s nice to see somebody none-Japanese that like his books!
How did you come to like Japanese literatures?
Do you also read Russian books? Dostoevsky is my absolute favorite.
(You can probably tell by the quotations on my profile. xD)
But yeah, it's no problem at all. :3 Glad to be of assistance.
