York University discriminates against Christian and Jewish coalition ahead of Israel Apartheid Week

Is this what we can expect from now on? Any anti-Israel group has the right to free speech, but pro-Israel groups do not? How many pro-Israel events will be canceled using the excuse of campus security? And how many Israel Apartheid Week events do you think will suffer the same fate?

Wednesday, 24 February 2010

TORONTO – At the last minute, York University has cancelled events organized by a coalition of Canadian pro-Israel students and organizations due to “security” concerns. The events organized by the Imagine With Us coalition were scheduled for this week in anticipation of Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), which begins on March 1.

The Imagine With Us coalition – a “multi-faith, multi-political movement that is concerned with maintaining Canadian values and keeping our campuses safe from hatred, discrimination and radical incitement, particularly from those subscribing to radical Islam,” explained Michael Mostyn, national director of public affairs for B’nai Brith Canada – is led by My Canada, a non-partisan organization of young adult Christians who are passionate about a variety of social justice issues, and B’nai Brith Canada.

On Monday and Thursday of this week, events were scheduled at York which included the participation of Middle East expert and political commentator Daniel Pipes, Israeli scholar of Arabic literature and political discourse Dr. Mordechai Kedar, former PLO terrorist Walid Shoebat, human right activist Rev. Majed El Shafie, social justice activist and founder of My Canada Faytene Kryskow, and B’nai Brith Canada CEO Frank Dimant. The events were scheduled to be streamed live to campuses across Canada and to be viewable online internationally.

On Monday morning, York University informed Imagine With Us campus partners Christians United for Israel (CUFI) that the university was cancelling the event due to the fact that Imagine With Us did not meet their requirements. York had required that the organizers include a formidable police and campus security presence paid for by the organizers, a list of all attendees in advance, a minute-by-minute synopsis of all speakers’ talking points and a ban on public advertising of the event at York and on satellite campuses.

York University has said that the requirements were demanded of the event organizers due to the participation of individuals who they claim invite the animus of anti-Israel campus agitators.

In an interview with the Jewish Tribune, Rob Kilfoyle, director of security at York, confirmed the event had been cancelled and stated that the need for security at events is determined on a case-by-case basis and that the participation of speakers such as Dimant and Pipes was the cause of the stringent requirements. When asked why similar demands were not made of the organizers of Israel Apartheid Week events, Kilfoyle stated that even though the organizers of those events will not be paying for their own security – as the university had demanded of Imagine With Us – York will be there “to monitor the activities.”

“York’s continued appeasement of anti-Israel agitators at the expense of Zionist Christians and Jews is unacceptable,” said Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada. “Regardless of the fact that York has, in effect, banned me from lecturing on their campus, the show will go on despite all of the hurdles that are being putting in our way.”

The Imagine With Us event organizers continued with the event at an off-campus location for the benefit of the satellite campuses and international online viewers.

This week, the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA) and Hillel, with the support of local federations, are also running a campaign. Entitled Size Doesn’t Matter, it stresses Israel’s remarkable achievements in science, medicine, technology, business and humanitarian aid. The following week, during IAW, The Truth Campaign will feature posters with messages challenging the veracity of anti-Israel messages.

This seems to be de-rigueur for institutes of higher learning. Two weeks ago Israel's Deputy Foreing Minister Danny Ayelon spoke at Oxford and was interupted by cries of "Itbah al Yahud" (slaughter the Jews). Oxford' adminstration offered mumble platitudes and promisess of "investigations". The individual responsible for the libel claims, who is known to frequent anti-semitc websites and support indivuduals with questionable ties to Hama and Hezbollah, that he was "misquoted".This hardly made a blip on Western Media outlets. I myself only learned about it two days ago on a pro-Zionist web-blog.

Appeasement doesn't work, disengagement doesn't work, rationalizing doesn't work.
Trying to change Israel's "brand" has been largely inaffective among the vitriolic, backward barbarians who have cry for "shariah" and disrupt public forums with maniacal shrieks of "Itbah al Yahud" there can be no dialog nor should there be with such people.

In Pirkei Avos we are told "In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man"
Israel has tried everything else. Looking at the world stage, quite frankly there appear to be either few or no "men" present. I believe it is time for Israel to "be a man."

Good response. Michael Oren had the same problem at UC Irvine. In fact CAIR and other Muslim groups now have a policy to disrupt any and all speeches made by an Israeli or a Jew or by anyone who is pro-Israel. They don't want that part of the conversation to be available for people to hear. That's their childish way of dealing with these issues.

So, my question to you is - how would Israel 'be a man'. What to you propose?

Pirkei Avos means 'Sayings of the Fathers'. It's a very special part of the Mishna with the sayings of the most important Jewish scholars and Rabbis. It's a beautiful book.

This comes from Jeff Goldberg: http://www.theatlantic.com/in...

In the Mishna, Hillel declares, "In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man." This is usually taken to mean that when other people are acting in an indifferent or cowardly fashion, one should stand up and be a mature, courageous human being. But it could also mean that one should act as a mensch -- a decent person -- when there are no others around, in a place where there literally are no men. God may be always watching but many of us care less for God's good opinion than for that of our neighbors. So we may have to fall back on the old standby -- strength of character, the kind of rock solid soul that would lead one to be heroic, even alone, on a desert island.

    Raven,

It has been demonstrated again and again by Israel's actions that either the Arabs don't speak Yid, or "mentsch-like"behavior on the part of israel really makes no difference to them.

The Torah makes it very clear in Shemot that if a thief is breaking into your house and he dies as a result of you defending your home , there is no blood guilt. If Israel is truly following Torah as a nation, then there is no blood guilt.

Hashem gave the Torah as a constitution for a "set apart people", a special treasure-- "Am Segulah". That is for a people who arep preapred to follow his ways, to be a set apart nation. The nationof priests that Bnai Yisroel was meant to be. Secular governments with secular agendas just have not cut it. Israel bends over backward to cater to the demands of people and powers who are "acting in Israels best interests". Acting in "the best interest" of Israel apparently includes castigating them for defending themselves, reviving centuries old blood libels against Jews and creating brand new ones even more heinous and unreasonable than anything the Nazis or the Papacy could have dreamed or desired in their wildest psychotic dreams. Essentially it equates with fomenting the most rabid anti-semitism that has existed at any time since the Shoah.

    Again ...

Again here in Canada last weekend in Calgary the following happened in less than a 24 hour period.1)About 50 White supremacists clashed with peace supporters outside calgary city hall.2)Saturday night , 4 synagogues and a Jewish community center were vandalized.3)The Holocaust memorial at the JCC was covered with swatikas. Calgary police have yet to decide if it is actually racially motivated.......go figure!!!

Bnai Brith Canada released a report this last week that indicates that with the exception of Toronto, anti-semitic incidents dramatically increased everywhere in the country in 2009. And this is Canada. This is the tip of the iceberg that is rapidly clearing the waterline in the EU.The UK and France are ground zero for antisemitism on a level that is reaching pandemic and very dangerous levels for Jews in those countries. Although, the Scandinavian states are certainly working overtime at making up for lost time. As a case in point I give you the whole Aftonbladet fiasco.

I think it really is time to be Am Segulah. If that means that Israel is out on that Island alone, they are in good company!!!

    Am Yisroel Chai!!!

    Blessings
