Yahoo! News Fires Reporter Over 'Black People Drowning' Remark: Does the Media Have a Liberal Bias?

A Yahoo! News reporter got caught on a live mic joking that Mitt Romney was having a party while black people were drowning. A reference to Hurricane Issac in New Orleans. Conservatives complain all the time about how the mainstream media has a liberal bias, and doesn't truly reflect the views of the country.

In my view, the news is supposed to be telling the" truth" from the middle. But I know that is a fairytale. CNN's ratings are tanking while FOX News and CNBC are showing triple digit growth. Maybe people want to hear the news from their own point of view? The news media, aside from FOX News of course, does seems to have a certain disdain for conservatives. Do you think this is an isolated incident or a sign of a bigger problem?

FOXNEWS.COM reports:
Yahoo News' Washington bureau chief was fired Wednesday after he was caught on a hot mic joking that Mitt Romney is happy to have a party while black people drown.

"..and doesn't truly reflect the views of the country." I/2 the country. But - media doesn't reflect much anymore, more rhetoric than anything.

I think both sides have their media outlets. And those who want to hear them go there. Reporters are people too, and his comment was not intended to be public.

So, it's OK to be a racist pig as long as it's private.

I'm glad one of those leftist talking heads (you can't call him a journalist!) got what was coming to him. They all need to tell us the truth and not only the propaganda they want us to believe.

But the comment was his personal, private opinion, caught on an open mic. It wasn't meant for the public. Everyone has his/her own opinion. It does not necessarily mean that they are biased in their reporting. I don't know this guy's reporting, so I think it's unfair to judge it without some samples that show/prove one way or the other.

May I use your argument next time a Conservative is caught in a 'private' conversation that is bigoted and full of hate?

    If it's appropriate, why not?

I have no problem with people's private opinions... everyone has one. I have a problem with people who spew hate around trying to be divisive. Our nation needs to unite, not divide... now, perhaps more ever before. Our two "parties" are obviously working together to divide us, The People, in order to better able to control us.
    Divided we fall.
I hate divisive discourse in the public arena. But I completely understand having a private, personal opinion (whether full of vehemence or not). I have my own personal feelings. However, I believe it's vital to keep public discourse as civil as possible because:
    1) We really are all in this together.
    2) I do not want to see the top 1-8% ruling over the rest of us in a plutocratic nation.
    3) A divided people is a weakened people & more vulnerable to threats (from within as well as from outside).

I do not believe it's fair to judge this, or any other, reporter/journalist before I've sampled his/her work. How is it possible for me to form an opinion without seeing some evidence.

All US media today is controlled by 1 of 4 corporations and is nothing like the investigative reporting of a few decades ago. While the talent may tend to lean left ownership is completely right wing but supports whoever is in power.

A case in point is the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. Before the invasion there were hundreds of interviews but only 4 or maybe 5 of them were with people against the war.
Remember Phil Donahue? He was the only one with enough balls to come out against the war and he hasn't been heard from since.

The news items about the war were inane. It was more like half time highlights than war, complete with state of the art graphics and color commentary.

The US media is the largest propaganda machine on the planet and works to keep the govt that supports it in control. It's more like collusion than cooperation.
Without the aid of the media we never would have gone to war or bought the fabricated tale about the WTC disaster and who was responsible.

In general, MSM has a liberal bias, while Fox has a conservative bias. "News" in general has become far more of a very large editorial than actual "news"-factual, un or minimally biased information that would produce a better informed, more thoughtful populace.

I think a better query would be " WHERE WAS OBAMA WHEN NEW ORLEANS RESIDENTS WERE DROWNING?"

Bush was pummeled over Katrina. OWEBAMA is blameless. The TEFLON president strikes again.

That, ladies and gentleman , is liberal media bias.

EXCELLENT statement! To this day, I still have no idea how the liberal news media found the way to blame Katrina on BUSH!

Just shows the absolute IGNORANCE of Americans to put the liberal media ahead of our Constitution! BUSH, BY LAW, was forbidden to go into New Orleans!

As far as I'm concerned, and keep in mind that I LOVE NEW ORLEANS... we need to abandon ANY and ALL efforts to save her! She is DOOMED to be another "Lost City of Atlantis" and "All the Kings horses and ALL the Kings men," will never save her! :(

Did you hear anyone in the Mainstream Media mention the NY Democratic primary candidate refer to the residents in his district as the "negrohood"?? No? Me either, but you can believe that if a Republican said it, it would have been reported and repeated several times a day for the next 3 months. http://www.nydailynews.com/ne...

No one knows who added those disgusting words to Mia's wiki page, the point was that the media never mentioned it, as they would have, if those words had been used to label someone on the Left. They only point out racism when they can put the label on the Tea Party or Republicans, saying words like "food stamps" or "Chicago" or "Obamacare" are racist "code words", but when true racism is appears, coming from THEIR side, then it is never mentioned.

You're ridiculous. It's a wiki page. It's not headline news. If and official said or did something like that on a news broadcast or at an event, that's news. not someone posting something on a blog or wiki page.

So you're defending the people who made those remarks on her wiki page because it wasn't said on a news broadcast? If the same things had been said on Michelle Obama's wiki page do you think the media would have stayed quiet about it? Does it matter who racist comments are made about? If you're going to point out racist rants, it should be done in all cases.
  • Heptarch Hidden ... 2012/09/06 14:10:12

"So you're defending the people who made those remarks on her wiki page because it wasn't said on a news broadcast?"

Of course not. I'm saying that someone being racist on a blog or wiki page isn't national headline news.

" If the same things had been said on Michelle Obama's wiki page do you think the media would have stayed quiet about it?"

Yes. Worse things are said about her and her husband all the time that don't make national news. Nor should it.

Now, if it is said by someone important or in a national forum, that's another story.
