Would you support a 28th Amendment to the US Constitution?

Chamberlain January 10, 2010 05:36:42
You!

One sure way of fixing some of the problems in this country as of late would be to force the government to abide by the same laws that they impose on the rest of us. Therefore, would you support the following....

Amendment 28
Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of
the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators
and/or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that
applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not
apply equally to the citizens of the United States.

No attorney speak, simple down to earth language that is in line with what the constitution was intended to be... a simple document that can be understood. I believe that if the founding fathers were with us today and could see what is going on in Washington DC, they would support such action.

It's just an idea, let me know what you think.

This amendment would finally make our members of congress & senate responsible to their constituents! A process that should have been since day one!

It seems as even now, I can only watch the current acts of treason and sabotage conducted against our constitution by the current assembly of the White House. Its just like the oil spill, how much damage to the environment or its "past state" is just collateral damage.

I think this expresses a sentiment a lot of us feel, but...

In fact, the final version of the health care reform legislation that was eventually passed in March 2010 stated that "Members of Congress and congressional staff" will only have access to plans that are created by the health care bill or offered through the exchanges established by the bill:
    (D) MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN THE EXCHANGE.

    (i) REQUIREMENT — Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are:

    (I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or

(II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act).

This is only common sense. Absolutely, laws passed in the United States should apply to all U.S. Citizens. Also, common sense, is that federal mandates made on the states should apply to ALL STATES.

It would only be fair for them to abide by the same measures of senior security that 'We the People' have to abide by. Things such as social security and medicare, if it is good enough for us then it should be good enough for them! If they believe that this new medical plan if good for us then why is there an out clause for them?

Our "ELECTED GOV'T. EMPLOYEES" should abide by the laws that apply to "We, The People" & not what they think they're entitled to. There should also be: TWO TERMS - MAX FOR ALL ELECTED GOV'T. EMPLOYEES" PLUS "NO CONTINUANCE OF SALARY" till they "expire/die." We worked hard for our taxed salaries for our existence & not for our "ELECETED GOV'T. EMPLOYEES' BENEFITS." KICK THEM OUT & ELECT SMART NEWBIES IN!" LAST BUT NOT LEAST = MAKE THEM PAY BACK 75% OF THEIR SALARIES TO THE LEGAL TAXPAYERS!

Please recognize that there are millions of "poor" peolple living within their OWN means that are not even asking for a govenrment handout - so why should those already living off the rest of us taxpayers get a better health care plan than these other hard working lower income citizens? Also, wouldn't it be nice if all the billionaires would donate a portion of their incomes to help the needy, those families living on incomes say less than $20,000/year - 'imagine what our country would be like then. I've studied the Swedish health care system and they have 'universal' health care - it's great!

I am confused by your answer, you said you would not support an amendment requiring congress and the senate to abide by the same laws they impose on the rest of us, but then your statement sort of indicates your understanding of the current system and sounds as though you don't support it?

I recognize the fact that their are many who do not live off of the government, but I do not believe the "Billionaires" you speak of are the evil doers that the left wing of this country would have you believe. A few studies have been done and it is amazing to me that the left wing rich tend to give less than the right wing rich when all is said and done.

I find that an interesting state of affairs since it is the left that are constantly taking our money for the "poor". As for the Swedish "Universal Health Care", I question how good it really is because I know someone in medical school there and they are not far from becoming a doctor and they have not been in school nearly as long as they would have in the US. Not saying that theirs is not a good system, I am always suspicious of anything the government is going to "give" me.

Per the "Top Comment" below: Article V of our Constitution has the provision that allows two thirds of the state Legislatures to convene, discuss proposed amendments, and then bring it to the floor of the congress. If three quarters of the state legislatures agree, the amendment becomes law WITHOUT CONGRESS APPROVAL. In todays terms, our founders were genius to allow for the States to seek amendments......in the name of WE THE PEOPLE!!

What planet are you living on? There are many laws that do not apply to the government, if you're a police officer, just try writing a congressman or senator a speeding ticket. They have free (universal) health care, paid for by you and me. These two examples are but a few of the many laws that they are exempt from.

But they literally have their health expenses paid on our dime. True that you or I could get health care, but try not paying the bill and see what happens to your credit score. They do not have that problem.

    "try not paying the bill"

I've never paid a single one of my medical bills out of my own pocket.

All I'm saying is that this proposed "Amemdment" is not well thought out. It would make it impossible for Congress to do pretty much anything.

Hey, there's an idea. There could definitely be some salary caps, like the ones they put on any company that took bailout money, it's only fair. They said that since the company was taking our money that there should be limits on salaries, the same could be said for the government... they take our money and accomplish absolutely nothing, therefore they are failures too. Great idea!

I am definitely in favor of such an ammendment but I think it must go much further. Any time the public signs a federal form they can be prosecuted if they tell a lie. I think all elected officals who make campaign promises and do not deliver on those promises should be impeached and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and forbidden from holding any elective office and banned from any kind of future dealings with the government
