Dear Sen. Obama

I'm writing with a simple request: attend the UN Climate Meetings this December and rejoin the world's fight against the climate crisis.

The need for an international deal has never been greater. NASA's top climate scientists have said that to avoid disaster the planet needs a plan both to cut carbon emissions sharply and immediately, and to steer a long term path back below 350 parts per million Carbon Dioxide.

And time is running out. The UN Climate Meetings mark a one year countdown to finish crafting an international climate deal.

I call on you, as President-elect, to commit to going to the UN meeting in Poland in December 2008 to:

*Commit the US to mandatory reductions of Greenhouse gas emissions that meet the urgency science calls for and transition the US to a clean energy economy.

*Commit to helping developing countries reduce their emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change, and to transfer the technology that will help bring the world to more sustainable economies.

Sending this strong signal to the world will help spur the negotiations so that a genuine global agreement meets the seriousness of the problem. The world is ready for action.

Thank You.

It is the responsibility of the United States to lead the global charge, given the fact that we have the largest carbon footprint in the world. It is put up or shut up time!

He needs to get his ass in there and work with the other world leaders.. And they all need to try to get Russia and China in the UN instead of being stuck in their Cold War/Anti-Communist ideals..

I support doing whatever we can to halt global warming. But we have one president at a time, and that's not yet Barack Obama.

I feel his presence would be very beneficial, however we have to be careful with injecting him into these situations prior to him actually taking office. I noticed a lot of criticism from people who felt he should have said more in his 1st press conference. Our situations are so dire that we are taking for granted the jump he's got on many of these issues we face. His financial advisory board is pretty much in tact. Chief of Staff selection made, and Chief Adviser in place yet we still feel like he's not doing enough. The worst thing he could do right now is provoke Bush by over-stepping his bonds.

If he does attend, it will only be as a US Senator or a private citizen. I expect him to have some surrogate(s) there, but the US only has one President at a time. President-elect Obama knows this better than I do.

I wouldn't mind him attending as President elect UH. It is not the point of making decisions for the US, but as someone posted earlier.... the US has the largest carbon footprint in the world (ahead of India & China I believe) so wouldn't it make sense to discuss ways that we can lead the world in lessening our negative impact?

The fact he isn't President until 12:00 PM, January 20, 2009 is an irratitating legality. George W. (Wrong) Bush is the sole representative of the American People to rest of the world until then.

UH, I am not suggesting that Obama represent the US, be his mere attendance achieves the same goal....

It's the simple matter of decorum. Until he is the President, stepping into the world arena may be considdered overstepping.

He does get the security briefings, as he has to be up to date as soon as he takes office. This is; however, a courtesy of the outgoing administration.

Andre, I feel like, given his celebrity, he may be a hindrance to the meeting. It would be good for him to send a representative to accumulate information on his behalf.

It has passed international gun laws that contradict the U.S. constitution. I don't mind it as a organization though which countries can negotiate peace talks, but passing international laws goes too far.
