I belong to the Yahoo Boulder Barter Group. This is a
Group where we hope to exchange skills & services
for those that we need instead of paying cash. This
may be the Monetary System of the future since the
value of the "dollar" is shrinking.

Do you believe this is a good idea? Would you want
to belong to a Barter Group?

Fantastic, bartering to me is something we should have never gotten away from. Everyone has something to offer even if they have no cash, getting away from a cash driven society in my view is a good thing.

Our small community does a lot of bartering anyway. It would be awesome to organize it!

I think we will have barter groups, if Obama is re elected ! The economy will crash in his next term and we will not have a choice. IMHO

I think it's a great idea. We need to get back to the mentality of fixing what's broken, instead of throwing it out. We also all have many skills which could be traded for things we need. For example, I can sew, knit, embroider, and also make jewelry. I suspect that I could trade some of those skills for some things I might find less than convenient to do, like yard work. There was a saying during the depression: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Instead of throwing away something perfectly good because it isn't the latest and greatest, I think we need to adopt a 'use it up' attitude.

It would depend on what items and/or services were being bartered for. If it was something really beneficial, I most certainly would.

I do belong to a barter group.
I trade my services for many other services with no cash transactions.
Some of those services are food, gas and internet credits I can use to purchase anything online with.
Your using your abilities as cash, same as cash except no money changes hands.

    barter

One of my friends started a group like this in Milwaukee: http://www.jsonline.com/news/...

Then some right wingers were saying that you can't exchange goods and services without there being a tax going to the government. And I was like... since when did right wingers want people to pay taxes?

I don't see how they could impose a tax when no money is used.

This is how we used to do things, barter and with trades and learning trades and skills (no stinking exorbitantly expensive 'college'). It worked then, it would work now. And if we all simply chose to do this and dropped the farce of working for fake money that will soon be entirely worthless (it already is next to that right now as it stands), but rather to produce in skills and goods for barter, we'd all live much simpler and happy lives and be able to do the things we want to do and are good at, not just those we have to do and settle for and don't like very much for any number of given reasons (for example, I'd love to be doctor but the fact that it takes $500K snatches that right up and off of the table).
