...the word 'jingoistic' should replace 'patriotic' in this question. Then my answer would be 'yes'.

Toyotas and Hondas have sold better than American cars for years.
Walmart (which imports mainly from China) is still the richest store in the US.
So, no, Americans are not patriotic, they just say they are.

It's too easy to confuse equal opportunities with equal outcomes. If you don't put in the effort, you won't get as big a reward, but sometimes, the other maxim applies: life can be unfair no matter what.

It is not patriotic to wave the flag, sing the anthem and then sit idly by as your country is being destroyed. Social equality is for ants, bees, and termites, not humans.

I think America is full of people who like to think they're patriotic, but if it were really true the Republic wouldn't be dead, the Constitution reduced to a museum piece, and a government that operates on political power-brokering rather than law. As for wanting social equality, I don't really know what that means, as it's an impossibility when dealing with so many individuals, cultures, beliefs, etc, as when one "group" claims to use government force to "become equal" another group ends up being treated unequally. It has never been about equality, but rather groups seeking special rights over the individuals, collectivism versus individualism.

Social equality is not a concept that Americans value. We are individuals, not cogs in a gear. Sorry but social equality lifts no one, just tears everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

what about "we are our brothers keeper"?
  • Reichstolz Morning... 2012/07/04 22:07:09
Where is that in any of our founding documents?

Offering a helping hand to your neighbor, a watchful eye against danger, etc isn't about social equality, it's about being kind and loving. Using government to force others to do the will of certain groups is not being your brother's keeper, it's being your brother's master.
