Would Universal Health Care Increase U.S. Competitiveness?

Reuters' Chrystia Freeland, speaking on CNN's "Parker-Spitzer" program, says that Obama's health care reform plan, while not perfect, is a step in the right direction toward increasing America's economic competitiveness. But what would really help America compete in world economy? Universal health care coverage.

SPITZER: So, Chrystia, let’s start with you. Competitiveness internationally is perhaps the dominant issue facing the United States as you look forward for 20 years. Have we done anything in the last two years to begin to turn the battleship on that critical issue?

FREELAND: Two important things.

SPITZER: Yup.

FREELAND: One is health care reform. Not a very good reform effort, but at least the president tried, and something that I think Americans miss is compared to other western industrialized nations, not having universal health care really limits mobility of labor. It makes it harder for people to start their own businesses and it hurts big companies. So if you look at the car companies, Ontario is doing better for the big car companies than Michigan is right now. And part of the reason is, the biggest reason-

SPITZER: So health care was one step.

FREELAND: They don’t have that burden. One step.

More government control will always reduce competitiveness and inventiveness. Just take a look at countries where government control is highest. You will see the loss of competitiveness and inventiveness due to lack of individual freedom and incentive. And the US is moving in that direction. Too bad for US.

Americans spend more on health care than citizens in other countries, yet our live expectancy and survival rates are poor when compared with other industrialized nations. I volunteer in a Free Clinic for the uninsured and frequently see people with advanced illness who had no other health care available to them until they became very sick and sometimes disabled. There is no reason why we are the only major Country that does not provide affordable health care to all it's citizens. If we provide preventive and early intervention services to everyone, our health care costs for individuals and industry will go down, reducing the costs of our goods and services.

The high costs and many problems with health care that we have now are entirely due to the interference of the government in the market for health care with over regulation, misguided laws that create perverse incentives, and simple corruption. When the US had the best health care in the world, there was very little interference by government. Universal health care would just turn over the health care market to the institution that has practically destroyed it.

And less expensive, good-quality health care makes economies more competitive. Germany has universal health care, spends a lot less on medical care, and is the world's second-largest exporter.

How come the US spends a lot more on medical care than any of the countries which have universal health care (17% of your GDP, vs. 6-11%)? Who is getting broke?

First, are you saying that other countries who have universal health care aren't going broke? I'm not saying that health care in the U.S. isn't expensive, but I am saying that the goal of good health care should not/can not be simply based on cost. There are principals that override cost. Having government control health care is not acceptable in a free enterprise system.

Your question, the answer is "yes", many European countries have financial problems which are generally unrelated to health costs, which again are far lower than in America. We are less interested in ideologies than in results. Free enterprise is fine, but it sometimes needs to be regulated. The people's interest comes first.
  • Skip JCD aka... 2011/01/01 20:16:09

NO, the principles of freedom come first! It isn't governments responsibility to take care of every person's interest. If the "people" had all the money that government wastes, there wouldn't be the need for all the "help" government gives us!

The excessive costs brought on by an incompetent government will drive costs through the roof and force more business to move out of the USA and relocate manufacturing to less expensive countries.

.We need ,and the world needs a type of Chiropractic called as a group Upper cervical specific only. Pettibon, and knee chest are good too,and www.upcspine.com has other technique names. learn what you can on that web page, and we have to have all as soon as possible be evaluated, for all ages, and have one to monitor your spinal heath. Best to not wait for the body to break down to be evaluated. Potentially from birth the spine is deteriorating faster than it should By atlas at the top of the spine shifting causing the whole spine to shift as well.

I don't see how universal health care could increase U.S. competitiveness; nor do I see how giving "health" coverage approved by insurance companies is good for anyone. Now if the health care is paid by our taxes and gets rid of the insurance companies and doctors start actually practicing medicine instead of adherring to insurance company demands, it might increase the health of the nation. What that would do for competitiveness is beyond me.

Since the cost of health care is outrageous in your country (17% of your GDP, vs. 6-11% in other rich countries which have universal health care AND a public insurance system), yes, it would cut waste and possibly make your economy more competitive. BTW, some US companies, like Hannaford Bros, offer medical treatment abroad to their employees.

Healthcare should NOT be competitive. All peoples should have access to the medical treatment needed to have a healthy body. It should not depend on how much they can afford to spend.

This chick is just dumb as a stump. How on earth is Obamacare supposed to increase our competitiveness?
Who are we supposed to compete with? The other socialists and their deathcare?
Are we going to out kill these other countries to prove that we care less about ourselves then they do?

No Universal healthcare system has worked anywhere near-as-well as planned.

In the case of Canada's (which is subdivided by province), the absolute worst is OHIP (you guessed it, that of morOntario) which was shown to be FUBAR when numbers of Americans (from NY and MI, both of which border on the AK-sized hellpit Province) were able to register for it (and access it) without ever having paid US$ 0.0097 (current value of C$ 0.01) into the system.

How much WORSE is the situation facing US where there are at least 12 million (possibly DOUBLE that) illegals present who ALREADY overburden the systems--and who don't pay into it at all--who will certainly abuse such coverage!

Huh? So your argument is that because some Americans take advantage of the Canadian Health Care System that means it is a bad idea for America to adopt a similar system because people from other countries could take advantage of it. WOW, you might be right on this, but this sounds amazingly prejudicial and hypocritical. Also I am moved by the opponents to this reform and the amount of empathy they have for their fellow man.

"Not having universal health care really limits mobility of labor. It makes it harder for people to start their own businesses and it hurts big companies." The people who want state run health care have never been in business and despise profit. Companies want good productive employees and reward them with fringe benefits. Forcing coverage on everyone just means that now losers that no one would hire will be getting free fringe benefits courtesy of Companies and their productive employees. Whose kidding who?
